Vacation

I've just started the second of a two week vacation with my family--the first week was spent at home, the second will be spent at a water park, then taking my daughter back to college. It's good to spend time like this with your loved ones, if only to remind you why you work.

To get away from your loved ones.

This week has been especially fun since A) we found out that the water park we were going to is closed during the week starting last week and our deposit for the trailer we were renting is non-refundable at this point. (Fortunately, the trailer people had just had a run-in with a family who drove three hours to arrive and find out the amusement park was closed, so they sent out emails to all their reservation holders reminding them of this salient fact, and letting them cancel their reservations.) Almost all amusement parks are closed at this point during the week, but my husband found one that isn't. Now we're going there.

Plus, since it's our daughter's birthday, we were taking a friend. The first got pregnant, the second couldn't get off work, the third could go until a couple of days ago when she couldn't get off work, then could again at the last minute.

Classes at the college where I work start this week, and I'm teaching two classes as adjunct faculty. One was offered me in desperation at the last minute, so I had to spend a lot of time preparing for it last week. I can meet one class on the first day, and had arranged an in-class assignment and coverage for the second, but the other will have to be covered totally without me for the first week. The cost of springing it on me. But I still feel bad.

I think my daughter had a good vacation this year. She couldn't find a job, but she did find a boyfriend. She spend the summer hanging out with him and his friends--they went to high school together, but he was in a class below her although they're born only a couple of weeks apart. She fit in really well with his friends (mostly girls, actually) and now they're all friends, too. It's been a good summer for her.

Now I have to go to work and prepare for classes, both those I'll be attending and those I won't.

work, vacation
