Shaking hands nervously pulled back the pearly white curtains separating the church’s offstage wings from the rows of wooden benches. Not many people were in the seats yet, only a few elderly family members and children climbing and playing hide and seek. Nino swallowed thickly and eased his way out, sneaking behind the randomly placed plaster columns, Nino was sure, Ohno’s “fiancé” requested. He quickly straightened out his dress shirt and took a deep breath.

Really he shouldn’t be here, he knew he was definitely uninvited by the fiancé, despite Ohno’s pleas to let Nino come. She had forbid Nino’s presence, both as a guest and definitely not as one of Ohno’s groomsmen. The two had never gotten along, since the day Ohno had muttered her name only two months after ending his and Nino’s almost 4 year relationship. Nino scowled in thought, remembering that it wasn’t exactly Ohno’s fault, Nino was the one who shouted the idea of ending it after all. Stepping out from the column, Nino turned down the nearest hallway of the church, dodging Ohno’s family and keeping out of the way of the fiancé’s stuffy and overly proper family members dressed in pastel colours that made Nino almost gag. Last thing he needed was to be recognized by either side. Calming his nerves again, Nino slouched into a chair in a cubbyhole next to the payphone and a dressing room.

A sudden shriek was heard deep from the room, startling Nino and making his nerves on end. He heard the fiancé’s voice ring out, seeming to be yelling at one of her bratty bridesmaids. Nino rolled his eyes, still completely baffled what Ohno exactly saw in this girl.

A light tap on Nino’s shoulder almost made him jump out of his seat and let out a shriek of his own, but when he saw three friendly faces, he sighed in relief.

“Thank god you’re here.” Jun grumbled, messing with the white corsage on his tux that matched Aiba’s and Sho’s.

“We knew you’d come crash this! Have you seen Ohno yet?” Aiba asked in a hurry, absentmindedly brushing off Nino’s shirt and fixing his hair. Nino pushed his hands away and sunk back into the chair, squeezing his eyes shut.

“No… listen… I don’t know if I can do this.” Nino mumbled, feeling that tight, choking feeling in his throat again. The three groom’s men looked at each other wearily before they all heard loud rustling and chatter of the bride’s maids exiting the dressing room. Aiba quickly jumped on top of Nino in the chair, covering him completely as Jun and Sho sat nonchalantly on the armrests to avoid any view of Nino.

Nino whimpered into Aiba’s shoulders, trying to keep silent as the chattering of the girls drew closer.

The fiancé stepped out into the hallway in a dress that looked surprisingly like a pastry, a smug smile on her face and flanked by her crew that didn’t take kindly to Ohno’s friends. She stopped in her steps as the boys came into view and her smug smile turned into annoyance.

“Don’t you know where Satoshi’s room is?”

Nino growled into Aiba’s back, a bolt of hatred shocking him as Ohno’s name came from her lips. Aiba gently poked Nino in the ribs to calm him.

“We know where it is.” Jun replied sourly. The fiancé looked the boys up and down for a moment, wrinkled her nose at Aiba’s crumpled and awkward position and then excused herself. Sho watched the group turn the corner and when they had disappeared into the room to prepare for the march, he signaled for Aiba to get up.

Aiba quickly jumped up and apologized to Nino as he gasped for air. Jun stared at Nino, waiting for him to look up at him. Feeling the cold stare, Nino flicked his eyes up at Jun.

“If you don’t do this, I will.” Jun growled, making his point loud and clear. There was a tense silence and then Sho softly announced that they had to go fetch Ohno. Nino watched in a confused and nervous daze as his friends walked down the hallway to Ohno’s room, casting hopeful glances over their shoulders as they entered the room.

Nino chewed on his lips, his insides shaking and his stomach churning. This was his only chance to speak up, his only chance to make things right again. But his eyes were stinging with tears as he began to doubt himself. It had been a year since they had broken up, things changed and Ohno had moved on. He had fallen in love again, he had moved on while Nino watched. In frustration, Nino roughly dried his eyes and took a few deep breaths. A sudden click of a door opening caught Nino’s attention and he stealthily slid behind a large potted plant.

And out from the room came the groom and his men. Nino was sure his breath was taken that moment Ohno stepped out. Dressed head to toe in a black tux, his shoes shined like a mirror and a matching corsage with a single yellow flower, Ohno stiffly walked out and paused as he waited for his friends. He brushed a hand through his neatly styled hair, his tired eyes locked on the floor under him and breathed a deep, silent sigh.

Nino’s heart dropped at the sight. Ohno, his Ohno, looked terrified, cornered and alone. It took all of Nino’s willpower to not run and grab the man into the tightest hug he could give, to kiss his eyes and take away those emotions.

“Seriously, am I the only one who gets hungry when I look at her dress?” Aiba’s voice rang out as finally the groom’s men joined Ohno. Ohno smiled halfheartedly and lead the others to the ceremony. Sho paused just a foot away from where Nino was hiding and pulled back on Ohno’s shoulder. Being his man of honor, Sho told Aiba and Jun to go ahead of them. Nino felt his heart jump into his throat again, he knew that Sho knew he was hiding somewhere around where they were stopped. Aiba and Jun nodded and continued as Sho looked over Ohno, straightening out any wrinkles.

“Are you okay?” Nino heard Sho ask softly. Nino’s eyes were wide as he stared at Ohno and waited for his response. The groom nodded slowly but chewed on his bottom lip.

“Did… did anyone hear from Nino today?” Ohno asked worriedly. Sho paused in thought, then slowly shook his head.

“No, but don’t worry about him, Nino’s strong. He knows this is what you want.” Sho smiled encouragingly but Ohno’s face fell.

“…yeah.” he murmured. Sho’s brows knitted together and he looked sternly at Ohno.

“You want this, right?” Sho asked firmly, causing Ohno to look up. Nino’s heartbeat thudded in his ears, waiting for Ohno’s reply.

“I do.” and with those words, Nino felt his heart sink but at the same time, he noticed Ohno’s pained expression. Sho nodded and after a brief pause, patted Ohno’s back and walked him to the ceremony.

Finding the strength to stand up properly, Nino found that the halls of the church were empty, as everyone was inside for the wedding. Sneaking back in the forgotten staff door, Nino made his way back into the wings of the church and ending up behind the curtains again. This time when he looked out, Nino found the pews filled to the brim with family. Ohno was there, standing at the alter, waiting for the bride. Nino’s stomach flip flopped, making a wave of nausea wash over him. But he looked at Ohno and found the determination to keep going.

Once again, Nino slipped behind a column, only to find himself face to face with Ohno’s sister. She smiled and held up her finger to her mouth, silencing Nino and taking his hand as she lead him to a bench. Nino found himself sitting next to Ohno’s sister, her husband and their child, almost purposely placed in the middle so everyone would notice if Nino had the guts to stop the wedding.

“You better say something.” Ohno’s sister hissed in his ear before everyone stood as the wedding march echoed through the church. Nino, joining the standing crowd, watched as flower girls and bride’s maids walked down the aisle, all of them looking displeased to have Ohno’s friends on their arms. Then suddenly, there was the bride with her father, stepping in tune with the music that seemed to change into a death march in Nino’s ears. Nino would never admit he was jealous of the way she seemed to float down the aisle, making Ohno smile nervously and reach out to take her hand. As the guests sat down, Nino bristled angrily as Ohno gently lead the girl to stand in front of the alter. A soft hand patted Nino’s arm and he nodded to Ohno’s sister in understanding.

This was it. The moment that would change everything. Nino’s palms started to sweat, he felt sick and just wanted to sink into the floor. The preacher smiled at the two, then turned his attention to the guests. Nino couldn’t hear anything but the last few words.

“…speak now or forever hold your peace.”

There was a pause, only seconds, but to Nino it was an eternity. His mind went through a million choices, stand up or remain silent. Speak or lose Ohno forever. His legs were quaking and Nino wondered how he was able to remain standing.

The church was silent and every single pair of eyes were on him. Some absolutely horrified, others confused and a handful that were shining with relief.

But Nino couldn’t see anybody. All he saw was Ohno, staring at him like he had just sprouted ten thousand heads. Aiba happily shook Sho’s arm, who was grinning just as wide as Jun. The bride however, would have killed Nino in a million ways if her glare could kill. Ohno had dropped the bride’s hands long ago and he took a step towards Nino.

“Kazu…” Ohno breathed, his face stuck in astonishment. Nino felt the tears coming, so he quickly stumbled across Ohno’s sister and her husband and into the petal showered aisle.

“Don’t say yes, Toshi.” Nino said barely above a whisper, though it rang out in the silence. Ohno remained stunned and Nino continued.

“Please, hear me out… don’t say yes.” Nino’s voice trembled and he searched Ohno’s eyes frantically for something, anything. The bride suddenly stepped forward, grabbed Ohno’s hand and pulled him back hissing his name angrily. But Ohno kept staring at Nino, whose eyes had grown wet and his lips red from nervous chewing. The situation suddenly hit Nino, what he was doing and all the eyes on him. He swallowed his tears and in the shocked silence, Nino turned away and walked up the aisle before he could humiliate himself, and Ohno, any further.

But even after the heavy doors had closed, the church was silent and Ohno’s focus was the spot where Nino used to be. His mind was churning, looking back and forth between the doors and the bride, holding tighter to his arm. Then slowly and gently, Ohno turned towards the bride and smiled.

“I’m sorry.” Ohno apologized softly, drawing out gasps and shocked muttering. He leaned in and kissed the bride’s cheek before stumbling down the alter steps and trotting through the church’s doors.

Nino hadn’t gone far in his dream-like state, leaning against the wall just beside Ohno’s previous dressing room. He couldn’t believe that he had just ruined someone’s wedding, Ohno’s wedding. Down the hall, Ohno had rushed out, looking up and down the hallway before deciding which way to go.

As Nino wiped his eyes and made up his mind to go home before the wedding had finished, Ohno sped around the corner and stopped both in their tracks. Ohno stared at Nino’s round and bloodshot eyes barely a foot in front of him.

“Kazunari.” Ohno said in relief. Nino remained silent, watching Ohno’s every move and trying to keep the flame of hope down.

“Satoshi, what-”

“I didn’t say it, I couldn’t say it.” Ohno said in a rush, stepping forward and catching Nino’s face between his hands. Nino gaped at Ohno’s stern and serious gaze, not entirely sure what to do.

“Wh-what?” Nino whispered, his hands taking Ohno’s hands off his face and holding them tightly. Ohno swallowed and frowned slightly.

“If you weren’t there Kazu… I would have made a big mistake today. ” Ohno’s frown slowly turned soft and Nino couldn’t help but to give a half laugh and half sob. Gently, Ohno pressed their foreheads together and smirked.

“I’ll always love you.” Ohno whispered sincerely, brushing Nino’s hair from his face.
“Idiot.” Nino whispered in reply before he started to cry again. Laughing softly, Ohno lightly put one hand on the small of Nino’s back and the other catching the younger’s chin to finally pull him into a passionate and well overdue kiss.
