Chapter 2:

Forgotten Date

When the door opened to reveal a tiny and cluttered living area, Ohno could only stare and wonder where exactly he would live. He had heard the news at the airport from his mother that he was no longer living in his childhood home and even though his family was incredibly happy about Ohno living with Nino, Ohno was stunned.

"Sorry about the mess… the restaurant took up my time to clean." Nino mumbled apologetically as he nudged boxes of Ohno’s stuff out of the doorway to allow Ohno in further. The apartment was only one giant room, separated by curtains to make a bedroom, kitchen and dining areas. Boxes of mostly Ohno’s belongings were stacked high by the dinner table, blocking out most of the window and intruding into Nino’s dark bedroom.

Nino squeezed past Ohno and his luggage, tossing his keys on a small side table next to a littered ashtray and a jar that seemed to be overflowing with coins, and shut the door behind them. Ohno watched him curiously, watching him frantically pick up books and games and random objects that somehow found their way to the most peculiar places.

Looking around him in the biggest area of the house, Ohno smiled at the gaming systems and latest television, chuckling to himself when he noticed that this area seemed to be the most tidy. Magazines and video game cheats lay in piles around the television and empty beer cans built into a small pyramid against the wall. Nino was moving quick around the tiny place, arms full of laundry and darting between rooms, all the while apologizing to Ohno. Pushing his luggage against the wall, Ohno stepped over the pile of boxes labeled "manga" and caught Nino in his path by the arm. Looking at Ohno worriedly, Nino felt his heart starting to pound like he was back in his schoolboy days.

"I like it, it’s cozy and very… Nino." Ohno laughed as he grinned happily. Nino smiled broadly and took Ohno’s hand to lead him into the bedroom.

"I hung up your clothes like your mother asked, she knew you wouldn’t do it." Nino said, opening the sliding closet door to Ohno’s half. Inside, Nino had hung all of Ohno’s clothes up, some of the stuff put into their shared drawer and others still inside boxes. Ohno smiled and glanced around at the room, decorated here and there with posters and pictures and books. Then his eyes fell onto the single futon lying on the floor and turned his eyes to Nino, who was looking at the same thing.

"There’s not much room…" Nino started slowly, playing with his fingers nervously. Ohno didn’t mind at all sharing a bed with Nino, but he wasn’t quite sure what to say when Nino was oddly quiet and not voicing his opinions at all. Turning to Nino, Ohno took Nino’s hand and easily pulled him close and into his arms.

The two knew their relationship was great over the phone, the endless conversations and the amazing comfort to do anything and say anything… but when it came to real life, Ohno and Nino realized now that they had no idea how to act.

So, in an attempt to salvage the remaining comfort, Ohno pulled Nino’s head up from his shoulder and kissed his nose gently.

"We should catch up." Ohno suggested happily, seeing pure relief take away the nervousness in Nino’s eyes. Nino smiled and nodded, leading Ohno out into the dining room with a tight hold on his hand.

The two talked into the night over a few cans of beer and under the dim light of Nino’s dining room light. Ohno shared stories of Paris and London that made Nino laugh until he was in tears, and Nino told Ohno about the restaurant and all the colourful people that came in. They talked about memories that made them laugh and almost cry, neither one of them wanting to ever stop talking. But when the drinks ran out and there was only one topic they hadn’t covered, the apartment was silent once again.

Nino sat quietly with his hands in his lap and staring down at the designs in the tabletop and Ohno hunched over, twirling his last can between his fingers.

"I still love you."

Nino raised his eyes to Ohno, watching the older man sit up and drop his hands in his lap while staring up at the dim light. Holding his breath, Nino knew Ohno wanted to say more, so he remained quiet, watching the man closely.

"You know… I thought we’d be back to normal when I got back…" Ohno started again, not even glancing at Nino once. Not entirely sure what Ohno was saying, Nino looked back down to his lap and frowned in thought.

"We’ve grown up and we’ve grown apart, Toshi." Nino finally managed to say, lifting his head up again to meet Ohno’s agreeing smirk. Slowly, Ohno stood up from his seat and moved over to Nino, sitting down so close that their knees overlapped. Nino started to laugh and quietly complain about Ohno being too close, but was suddenly cut off as Ohno quickly kissed him. He lingered by Nino’s lips, waiting and anticipating what his next move would be.

Nino felt the warm, steady breath of Ohno on his face, making him feel like he was in a sort of a trance. Yet, he couldn’t seem to move. Ohno was waiting for Nino to do something, to show him it was okay to go further. With a mind of their own, Nino’s hands found Ohno’s face and softly pulled him in again, this time replying to his lips.

Waiting for this time for several years, Nino expected it to be full of passion and demanding force, but it was anything besides that. There was passion, of course, but it was also soft and full of the love the two had been missing and living without. Somehow, as Ohno’s hands snaked around Nino’s hips, Nino had shifted forward to almost sitting in Ohno’s lap, deepening the kiss and locking his fingers in Ohno’s hair.

As Ohno pulled away for air, but still kept a strong hold of Nino and brushed kisses along his neck, Nino let his eyes flutter open and he instantly spotted his clock nearing eight-thirty.

"Ah! I forgot!" Nino suddenly exclaimed, startling Ohno and jumping up in a hurry. Ohno could only blink in confusion as he watched Nino clamour into his tiny bedroom, flicking on lights and throwing open his closet. He quickly ripped off his t-shirt and replaced it with a much more fancy button-down shirt and stumbled out of the room while buttoning.

"Forgot what?" Ohno finally asked curiously, following Nino rush about with his eyes.

"I have a date!" Nino groaned loudly, flipping through his wallet to check if he still had extra money. Ohno sat shocked in his area, seriously wondering if Nino was telling the truth.

"Date?" Ohno asked, feeling suddenly worried and a bit rejected. Nino sensed Ohno’s troubled tone and looked over at him with a smile.

"I just have to go to dinner, don’t worry, I’ll end it tonight." Nino promised, leaning over to gently kiss Ohno once again before dashing over to the door and tossing it open. Ohno quickly stood up, trying to catch Nino before he left.

"Bye-bye, Oh-chan!"

"When will you be-" but Ohno’s question was never heard over the slam of the apartment door. In the now deathly silent home, Ohno could hear nothing but the ticking of a clock and a dreadful loneliness. Scratching his head softly, Ohno sat back down by the table and pulled out his phone, ready to call Sho.

Drumming his fingers on the table, Ohno waited until Sho’s answering machine picked up before hanging up and calling Jun.

"Hello! Matsumoto Jun’s phone, Aiba Masaki speaking!"

"Oh, Aiba-chan?" Ohno asked curiously with a slight smile.

"Ohno-kun! Did Nino bore you already?" Aiba asked cheerfully, making himself at home on Jun’s couch. Ohno shook his head slowly.

"No, he’s on a date." Ohno said sadly, ignoring a painful pang of jealousy. On the other line, Aiba scowled and paused for a long moment.

"A date? Aren’t you supposed to be with him?" Ohno snickered quietly at Aiba’s question and laid his head on one of his arms.

"I guess it’s with someone else… he said it was just dinner." Ohno mumbled, listening to Aiba’s sounds of disapproval and eating.

"Aiba-chan?" Ohno said quietly after a few moments of silence.

"Hm?"

"Why are you at Jun’s place?" Ohno’s question drew a long sigh from Aiba, who had set down his dinner on the glass table and turned down the television.

"He’s working now… but I’m going to stay here for awhile." Aiba explained sadly. Hearing his friend’s tone of voice, Ohno knew there was trouble again with Sho and Aiba’s relationship. Ohno looked around him and grabbed an old blanket from one of his boxes before sitting down again and opening his ears to Aiba.

The date had lasted longer than Nino had hoped and since the date turned from dinner to a birthday karaoke celebration, he found it hard to refuse. But at the end of the night, Nino ended the short lived relationship with many apologies. As quietly as he could, Nino opened his door and hoped he wouldn’t find Ohno too mad at him.

"Oh-chan, I’m sorry…" he whispered, but stopped right away when he spotted Ohno slumped over the dining room table and fast asleep with a blanket around him. Nino smiled to himself, locked the door, and tiptoed over to Ohno.

Taking a moment to just watch him sleep, Nino wondered if he should wake him up or let him sleep. Softly poking his cheek, Ohno only whined and Nino grinned in adoration.

Knowing that Ohno was probably suffering from major jetlag, Nino dug out another blanket and covered Ohno, carefully tucking some under his arms so he would be comfortable, and retired to his own bedroom for the night. But for a few hours, Nino only tossed and turned, unable to sleep with a new presence in the house.

Ohno, however, woke up in a confused fog, looking around his surroundings to remember where he was at. Then, he heard the rustle of fabric and knew Nino was finally home. Quietly standing up with blankets around his shoulders, Ohno sleepily tottered over to Nino’s room, reaching for the curtain at the same moment it was pulled open by a messy haired Nino.

The two stared at each other in the strained moonlight, both hearing the dull pulse of their heartbeats in their ears and begging for the other to speak.

"Couldn’t sleep?" Ohno whispered, adoring the suddenly shy smirk Nino gave when anyone managed to see through him. Nino shook his head and reached out for Ohno’s hand, who happily gave it to him.

"Sleep with me?" Nino asked hopefully. Ohno nodded and Nino pulled him into the room, bursting with happiness that the deafening sound of the lonely silence would finally be broken.
