Doctor/Rose versus Ten/Martha. Under the cut because it's utter nonsense and was written solely to drag me out of my emo and kick me into believing in my ship again. Sometimes I need to remind myself of this stuff, when I read articles about bed-sharing or the Doctor invites yet another person along.

For a moment there, I thought I could see where ( Read more... )

...though what’s the betting that the Martha shippers are the ones who identify with/want to be like Martha, and the Rose shippers the other way around?

Not necessarily. For instance, I'm waaaay more like Martha than Rose. I'm a medical student for starters :) But I'm still a Doctor/Rose shipper.

My problem is, I'm still a new fan. I only started watching the series about the time Gridlock came out. I ripped through the first two series in about three weeks or so, and became completely obsessed! And part of that obsession was with the Doctor and Rose's relationship. Doomsday made me cry for about three days. And the worst part? I went straight on to season 3. Like, the next day. I'd been so totally used to Rose and the Doctor, I was instantly prejudiced against Martha when I saw her. I just didn't like her.

But since Family of Blood/Human Nature, I'm really starting to like this girl. I think she's got guts. But I'm never going to be able to ship her and the Doctor. I still live for every angsty mention of Rose. And I just can't see them having the Doctor ever returned her love - that'd be two companions in a row.

But, however, I agree with you that Martha and the Doctor have a very strong relationship - friendship. I love their hug at the end of Family of Blood because for the first time since Doomsday, the Doctor looks truly, truly happy. And I love Martha for being able to pull him out of that semi-suicidal rut he was in for a bit (Daleks of Manhattan, anybody?).

As for the Doctor not mentioning Rose a whole lot - you've got to remember, even the fact that he told Martha her name/that they travelled together is a HUGE step forwards for him. He never even mentioned Sarah-Jane to Rose. For him, even the few mentions of Rose's name we get are the Doctor equivalent of shouting it to Martha through a megaphone. He's making good on his promise from School Reunion. I think Rose's line "But you never even mention her ..." really got to him.

Anyway, that was far too long ... sorry :)

Oh, you definitely have a point there. I'm decidedly far more like Martha (in terms of education, independence, stubbornness, sulkiness, whining - in fact, 80% of what I don't like in Martha is what I see in myself) - but despite all that, I just cannot identify with the woman. I can, however, identify with Rose, which was my (badly expressed, sorry) point =)

I love everything you're saying, I really do. I'd sit here and make points back at you but there's no sense in it because I simply agree completely. And, y'know, perhaps it's time for me to realise that, just because the show is a little lacking in the Rose references right now, doesn't mean that she is absent from the Doctor's thoughts :)

I wish I could love Martha, but there's just something stopping me. I went into the show with far more prejudice towards BP and Catherine Tate than Freema or Martha, but those two won me over within five minutes. It worries me slightly that HN/FoB was the first time I didn't have to roll my eyes at Martha's actions or Freema's acting. I've liked her recently, though, so hopefully it will continue :)
