Um, wow.
OK, so while I can't say I ship Doctor/Joan, I'd certainly go for John/Joan. He looks at her like he used to look at Rose. I hadn't noticed the contrast between a simple glance at Rose and a simple glance at Martha, hadn't noticed the amount of love he used to look at her with, but now I do. I really do.
Oof.
It hurts a little, watching him and Joan and knowing it can't last. (Though. Babies. In the trailer. WTF?! *grins* Is this how they're gonna carry on the series after Thirteen dies? Loads of little 1913 John/Joan babies?)
And yay, Rose! :D That was sad, though, with him saying that she just sort of disappears...
Thought it was rather shippy that he drew both Joan and Rose (though what happened to, "Stick men are about my limit"? *giggle* He's good!). Really said something about his relationship with both of them, considering there were no other humans in that book. I know they want to stick to new series stuff, so no old companions (though I noticed the previous incarnations of the Doctor and squeed a little) obviously, but there was no Jack, no picture of Reinette (though she did get a reference, but that's besides the point I'm making), no-one else. Not even any monsters or adventures from Martha's era, I notice. It was all Rose stuff.
I'm a happy little shipper.
I felt awful for Martha, though, truly awful, and for the first time I actually liked her, despite her utter inability to integrate herself (but that was amusing rather than annoying) and her silliness, trying to convince him of all this Time Lord stuff in a flipping public dance hall and not keeping the watch herself. Really, that seems the sensible thing to do.
Looks like you weren't right to trust him, Martha!
Goodness. Didn't Freema have her acting hat on today?! Somewhere, between last episode and this, she's actually learnt how to do it. Bloody hell, she was good. Really good. She had a chance to shine this week, too, with the Doctor being a bit...not-Doctor. More of this, please! She's clingy and she's silly and I want to shake her and say, GET ON WITH YOUR LIFE! He's not interested! Enjoy the time you have with him, don't waste it wishing for something you'll never have!! ...but that's because I cared about her in this episode, and I didn't like to see her wasting her time with him away, for the very first time. Previously, I've been more like, "OK, this chasing-after-the-Doctor is annoying", so I'm pleased that I actually managed to like her for a whole forty five minutes. That's a big thing for me. *wink*
I think it has a lot to do with the fact that, for the very first time, she HAD to be in this episode. It had to be Martha, because for the first time so much was centered on the way she deals with things and how she feels about the Doctor.
Though I really didn't like her calling the TARDIS a machine. Not her fault, really, if the Doctor hasn't told her the TARDIS is alive, but it was a let-down after the "Hello!", where I was thinking, yay, she's doing good stuff! ...Oh. Maybe not.
Great writing, scary villains (I jumped SO much when that scarecrow appeared at the window. And that girl's balloon is really starting to freak me out. Possessed kids for the win), interesting storyline, the Doctor falling downstairs...what more could you want from an episode?!
It made me rather uncomfortable to see him with Joan, actually, beautiful as it was, and even more so to see him teaching kids how to shoot. I loved that Joan thought that was wrong (haha, hell of a pick-up line there - "I was thinking about my husband getting shot"). It all just emphasises the humanness. And I understand now more than ever why there was never a proper on-screen relationship - in the kissing and marrying sense, not the loving each other sense - between him and Rose, because it's just odd to see the Doctor like that.
I haven't like a single S3 episode so far, but damn was I pleased with this one! ...Which is really something I never thought I'd say, considering the Doctor is going off with someone-who-is-not-Rose, but...
Wow. Yeah. This was brilliant. DW on top form. I find it interesting that the only story that's had heart, for me, or any real emotion, or even got a reaction aside from "Ugh, why did I bother watching this?" from me, is one where he's falling in love. Obviously, the show needs it. I vote for two companions, next time, with a bit of an Ian/Barbara thing going on! *grins*
*sniffs at the Doctor* That comment, about how often he's wanted to use the human-converter thing...ouch.
Everyone's comparing Joan and Rose, too, but I just can't see it. I can see that Joan is the type of person he'd fall for but not do anything about, as a Time Lord, but...further than that? No. I can't see her as a companion, either. She's thoroughly human - I even got the feeling that his diary of adventures/dreams made her a little uncomfortable - and that's what makes her so brilliant for these episodes, and that's her tragedy. I doubt she'll survive next episode, but even if she does, she wouldn't really...she couldn't be a companion, I don't think, especially as she's fallen for John Smith and not the Doctor.
No. Joan is not another Rose. She's her own person. Joan is older, more forward ("We make very good wives!" HA. Can you imagine her in 2007?! My goodness, she'd've had him in bed within minutes. *rolls* I love it), guided by a completely different set of morals, principles and social rules, a little more stuffy due to her time and job and the attitudes of the time. She gives less of that impression of wide-eyed wonder and innocence that Rose had, but more of a...I don't know. Motherly, homely vibe. The sort of person a human would settle down with. They have that adorable geekiness going that he and Rose had, and I can see the comparisons in the relationship, but not the person herself. No, I'm very happy with her being entirely her own person :)
