Last of the Time Lords (DW S3 spoilers, obv.)

You know, this could have been so damn epic, but RTD just didn't pull it together right.

For starters, that drumming wasn't properly explained. For something that has become - at least within my group of friends - such a motif of the show (I keep finding people drumming out that tune), it has no real substance behind it. Ugh. Such a wonderfully ( Read more... )

*gets out her reading glasses* ^_^

For starters, that drumming wasn't properly explained.

I was honestly confused about the drumming throughout the last two episodes. I think they started when The Master looked into the Vortex as a child and just kept going? And then they were used as a way of charming the entire world, essentially, into voting Harold Saxon. Like you, I agree that there could have been much more to this. The Doctor could have talked about it and thought up some theories to help the Master but all the Doctor really did, in my opinion, was say that he could help The Master with the drumming problem.

but it turns out that she's actually done very little except for a lot of talking and "I love him" admissions

That scene where she's talking to the people about her travels and about the Doctor... I was smiling for almost the whole thing. Until she said that she loves him. -__-" I swear right before she said it I was "please don't say it" but NO the writers had to stick that last bit in there. I really couldn't understand the point of telling those people about her love for the Doctor. The audience already knows this... all the people have to know is to think of the Doctor at a specific time.

Come on! Jack is a fighter, a - as Ten put it - defender of the Earth!

The only time I remember him fighting in this episode was at the end with the machine gun when he gets into the TARDIS. Oh and the Face of Boe thing... I was cracking up just like The Doctor and Martha to be honest. And I think the only thing that I liked about that thought was the idea that at least Jack will see Nine/Rose and Ten/Rose in the future. Though I have to wonder how will go from human to immortal to The Face of Boe, a completely new species.

And can I mention how much I HATE stupid, lame, awful, pseudo-deus ex machina, quick, turn-back-time-and-pretend-it-never-happened fixes?!! Argh!

This idea initially bugged me a lot because of how in the past we were told that messing with timelines and such... changing the past was wrong and would bring destruction. I'm rationalizing as having something to do with having Two Timelords instead of one. But still it does seem like a cop out to an extent.

I have never liked Martha more than when she came back into the TARDIS and opened her eyes.

I really really enjoyed that scene. It was great that we got to see her start the process of letting go of her crush and deciding to stay behind with her family and get back to a life that she was in the middle of. Hopefully, when she shows up in the next series she will be a better companion... the one we should have gotten instead of the crushed filled one.

I personally can't say much about her acting because I've only seen her in Doctor Who. I don't believe she had much of a stretch when it came to her character which would have helped.

Brilliant last scenes; gorgeous, perfect acting all around. *pats the Doctor* Alone again, hm? Dearie me. I think RTD wants to break him.

That acting was phenomenal. I teared up a bit because The Doctor again be the last of his kind. And you can see that he didn't want to be, he almost liked/craved the idea of caring for someone... especially someone from his own planet. The Doctor should really got something back from the universe after all his been through.

Like you I'm very excited about this next year! All we have to do now is wait for official press releases on the new companion and for Christmas to roll around. Did it take this long to find out that Freema would be the new companion? I thought we knew about this earlier...Really enjoyed your review!! Thanks!

I swear right before she said it I was "please don't say it" but NO the writers had to stick that last bit in there. - Ha, I was doing exactly the same, not to mention throwing my hands over my eyes when they replayed all the kissing and stuff. I had to say, it made me feel a little bad for Martha that the greatest affection she can recall from him was a "genetic transfer".

I was cracking up just like The Doctor and Martha to be honest. - I think there's something wrong with me; I seem to be the only person who didn't laugh. *grins*

Though I have to wonder how will go from human to immortal to The Face of Boe, a completely new species. - Not to mention lose all his limbs, grow tentacles, expand to become a face twice the size of his original body and acquire a tank. But hey. I get the feeling this is one of those things we're just not meant to take seriously or analyse. *zips mouth shut*

The Doctor should really got something back from the universe after all his been through. - Absolutely. He's had enough taken from him. Couldn't he at least have been allowed to keep the Master like a puppy? *grin* Or, you know, keep Rose? *cough* Not that I'm biased, or anything.

Did it take this long to find out that Freema would be the new companion? I thought we knew about this earlier... - Mm, we did. They announced her as the new companion about three days before Doomsday aired, which I thought was a teeny bit distasteful and made me want to poke them with sticks.
