Last of the Time Lords (DW S3 spoilers, obv.)

You know, this could have been so damn epic, but RTD just didn't pull it together right.

For starters, that drumming wasn't properly explained. For something that has become - at least within my group of friends - such a motif of the show (I keep finding people drumming out that tune), it has no real substance behind it. Ugh. Such a wonderfully ( Read more... )

Continuing from above ...

And, of course, there are all those awful moments that are so ridiculous that they pull you right out of the story and force you to goggle at the screen.

For me, it wasn't the elf-Doctor (though that really pushed me up to the edge), it was the Tinkerbell ending. For the first time ever in a DW, I was groaning out loud and saying, "You have GOT to be kidding me!" In general, I definitely subscribe to the whole "buy the premise, buy the joke" point of a sci-fi show, and I can suspend a lot of disbelief if I'm engaged with the characters. But I agree with you that this episode had moments that took even sci-fi/fantasy way over the top.

I'm not even going to go into Jack being the Face of Boe. I daresay you all feel the same about it, and I swear RTD was drunk when he put that in. It doesn't merit discussion, really, this; it doesn't even fit with canon. And I'm not happy or impressed that Ten and Martha were laughing when they'd watched the Face die only a few episodes before. Not impressed at all.

I'm not sure yet how I feel about Jack being the Face of Boe (assuming he is; it's implied but even the Doctor can hardly believe it), but in Ten and Martha's defense, yes, they'd witnessed Boe's death, but it was 5 billion years in the future! You can hardly say Boe's death was a tragedy. *g* And considering I had the same basic reaction as the Doctor -- hell, I almost swallowed my tongue in shock, LOL -- I can hardly blame him for doing the same. ;)

All in all, I don't disagree with many of your points, but neither did I hate the episode. It definitely won't be on my rewatch list, but then again, I can't think of a single episode of S3 that would be. But compared to how I felt about this season during the first half of the season -- ready to chuck it all and move on completely -- the second half of the season brought my interest back and got me excited about the show again. Roll on, S4!

For the first time ever in a DW, I was groaning out loud and saying, "You have GOT to be kidding me!" - I believe I shouted, "What IS this rubbish?!" several times.

I'm not sure yet how I feel about Jack being the Face of Boe (assuming he is; it's implied but even the Doctor can hardly believe it) - *grins* My friend Em and I have decided to believe that he was nicknamed the Face of Boe ironically, after the already existing actual, uh, face. Because it just doesn't FIT any other way.

It definitely won't be on my rewatch list, but then again, I can't think of a single episode of S3 that would be. - It's so sad, but I'm exactly the same. The only ones I've rewatched are Blink and Utopia, because I adore Carey Mulligan and John Simm. But last year? Blimey, I was sneaking downstairs at 3am and watching on mute, I was that keen to see the episodes again. Heavens, I drive the rest of my household bonkers watching them on repeat even now.

Roll on, S4! - Absolutely =D I was dreading S3, but I'm really excited about next year, especially as it's rumoured to be DT's last. Regenerations are usually quite brilliant.
