Autumn leaves

Oct 07, 2006 05:14

The falling leaves drift by the window
The autumn leaves of red and gold
I see your lips, the summer kisses
The sun-burned hands I used to hold

Since you went away the days grow long
And soon Ill hear old winters song
But I miss you most of all my darling
When autumn leaves start to fall

-- Johnny Mercer, based on Les Feuilles Mortes by Jacque Prevert

Sorry, folks. I was listening to Way Out West and it samples the final refrain from this wonderful old jazz standard (as performed by Coldcut). It's true though.... winter's coming and it's not like I'm not already troubled enough without the seasonal shift kicking my ass. I'm not sure it's possible for me to become more reclusive, but you can bet I'll try.

Edited to correct attributation and extend a bit....

After looking this up, I wanted to include the original French poem as well, but I'm kind of lazy so here's a link for the French lyrics and a side by side English translation. The French portion of the lyrics is more or less directly taken from Prevert's original poem. Check it out, it's very beautiful.
