The idea that your health and maintenance thereof is solely your responsibility is a little bit faulty. Since you're NOT seeing doctors for preventative care or for smaller issues, the burden will fall on the state when you need to go to emergency care when your health issues get out of hand. It's cheaper to provide you care before you're disabled or in the ER.

WA passed legislation requiring health coverage for employees after a a series of studies showed that local businesses were losing more from lost productivity than the assumed cost of providing insurance. $Millions were getting flushed down the tubes on indigent care and on defaults on medical bills. This is no longer the case, and many public medical facilities were "saved" in the doing.

One thing that is different here is that the insurance companies are not legislated the way they are other places. You can't buy individual insurance for a reasonable premium, but businesses can; small businesses can fairly easily get buying power for insurance through trusts. Also, it should be noted that while companies are required to provide insurance, they are not required to pay 100% of the premium (I'm not sure what the laws are regarding that aspect) and if you think it's not worth it employees do have the option to opt out.
