So it's finally here. The Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games!!
I didn't watch all of the Opening Ceremonies, as I did have some things to get done tonight, but I did enjoy what parts I did see. I also made a point of watching the beginning and the end, as I figured those were the most important parts anyway. Oh, and when Canada entered the stadium, that was a must :).
Wayne Gretzky turned out to be the final torch bearer. People had speculated earlier this week when he was in town, and they turned out to be right after all.
Everything seemed to go off without a hitch, until it came to lighting the Olympic Flame. They had some issues with the hydraulics and the arms were having issues rising.
'We're sorry, you can't light the Olympic Flame ... cause the cauldron is kinda stuck in the floor' *headdesk*
The hydraulics issue did get sorted out, mostly. One of the arms didn't go up though, but at least they were able to light the Flame. I was beginning to wonder why the 5 torch holders were looking around all perplexed. lol.
Then Wayne Gretzky took the flame from BC Place to the outdoors cauldron at the waterfront downtown. However, in order to get out of the building, he had to go through an 'airlock'. Apparently, if you open all the doors in BC Place, the roof will deflate. It made me LOL when the announcer said that, but it also made me feel kind of embarrassed for Vancouverites. lol.
The announcer during the final outdoors run of the torch was obviously not paying attention. He was amazed that the torch Wayne Gretzky was carrying hadn't gone out yet because they normally have a 15 minute lifetime. Hello stupid announcer man, he changed torches TWICE since he headed out of the stadium. Oh well.
On a more serious note, it's very very sad that team from Georgia lost one of their athletes this morning during a tragic training accident on the luge course. They just showed the accident on the tv as I'm typing this, and Oh my GOD it was really really horrible. I did not want to see that. He went around a turn, he sled hit the wall at an odd angle and he literally flew off the track at a great velocity and hit the wall or something. Just terrible. He came all this way to show the world what he could do, and now he'll never get his chance.
