They're always so scary, honestly; when you walk through one door, all the other doors close and you can't go back to that crossroads ever again (mixed metaphor, I know). I interviewed at two schools recently and they both enthusiastically wanted to take me on board. One is called Sunshine and the other is a branch of American Eagle (an English school conglomerate thingy). The first was referred to me by my former coworker who repeatedly apologized to me about the crappy way I was treated at my most recent school, Spring Pond, and wanted out of guilt to find me a good new post. The other was referred to me by Art. Sunshine is four days a week, and they pay a little bit of money for paperwork, which is unusual. I liked their manners, the atmosphere, and how good everyone's English was. Surprisingly, fluent English is not a guarantee at these English teaching schools. It seems to have more work built into it, with an expectation of worksheets and tests, etc. But I was impressed by how well they explained it all, and that they explained beforehand instead of telling me at the last minute like most schools do.
American Eagle seemed promising too, and the vibe is a lot more relaxed there...but the English showcased by the secretary there didn't seem to be too strong, and there was a sort of unprofessional aspect to my interview in that I had to wait for about an hour before meeting the woman I was arranged to meet. The Demo went very well, and to be honest, I was quite attracted by the laidback feeling there..but, I realized I don't really want to work at this school because Art works there. I don't have anything against Art, but I want to do my own thing, and not be automatically hooked up to someone else, if that makes any sense. I want my areas to be kind of particularly separated from each other, and I don't really want to blend things. Also I feel like it's a trap; I'll think it's an easy job, but I'll get caught unawares by something or other. It turns out I prefer to just know everything I have to do upfront, even if the sum of those duties is much more than at the other school. So, I chose Sunshine School and I'm going to their school tomorrow to sign the contract, pick up the materials so that I can prepare for the upcoming semester.
Here's hoping I made a choice I can live with long enough to make enough money to move to Taipei!! @_@ I'm setting the bar low on purpose so that I don't have a far way to fall if I get disappointed hahaha
