dreaming in electric blue, r (full story) [
song]
prologue, 336w
a/n: if you know me, you know i love robots so this was apt to happen.. technically i started this fic last autumn but i never took it seriously enough for it to flourish~ but here it is! a year later (and much better than i would have originally written it). it's angsty, but what's new~
The year is 3035 and mankind, no longer able to reproduce, has created the next best thing.
An artificial intelligence that can learn, be cared for and take care of others. Above all: it is
the first A.I. operating system to love unconditionally.
But Taekwoon-a machine in a man-made world-learns that nothing could have prepared him for what it is to be human.
dreaming in electric blue
I said to the sun, Tell me about the big bang.
The sun said, It hurts to become.
- Andrea Gibson
At first, it was dark.
He didn't like the dark. It was aggravating to be kept inside it as sounds crashed like moving waves all around him. It was as if he was lost in living black: set adrift somewhere hollow where there was no up or down. But then the light came: small at first, like a pin point off in space, a shining star in the vast dark of the sky. Then it grew and opened up, like a blossoming flower, and he could see, and he knew that what he saw was color; the solid metal beneath him was artificial ground. The base of a building.
He was started on August 14 and completed on September 6. He could see the slate grey of raining skies through the tall window in which he was kept in front of for all of time. It was as if the machines that pieced him together wanted him to have a view as they worked. And as he watched rain fall sideways and the oncoming of day, night flooding like deep waters from the east, he learned that weather was non-sequential but that day and night was a significant element of human order; the silence of night was that of a muffled voice: heard, but only just. As unnerving as he found the dark to be, he had requested to be given the chance of sleep, as the humans were given. He could then go to the place where dreams were made and watch the pictures his mind created from information the doctors had transferred to him. But all the time he slept, bound by wires as the lithium alloy of his bones was mended and formed, he dreamed of only one person.
There was a boy-the one who had designed every piece of him-waiting, but not somewhere he could be seen. Soon, he would come and together they would go to a place called Home. From there, Taekwoon would begin what the humans called: his life.
