So, I just got back from seeing "Shutter Island", and I can safely say that it is an absolutely amazing movie. I won't be discussing any spoilers here, but I will offer brief and vague commentary. For one thing, the cinematography was phenomenal. Other than a few continuity errors (which may have been on purpose), I was impressed at what they were able to accomplish. The story was hands down one of the more entertaining ones I've sat through in a long time. A friend of mine says that they had a little too much exposition in a couple of scenes, but I countered that, considering the circumstances and the layers of the movie, it made sense for them to be that way (more on that later). The acting was also superb, with frankly few (and iffy at that) exceptions. The only guy that may not have been up to par was the main psychiatrist, but it depends on how you interpret the character.
God, I hate being so vague right now.
Anyway, there are just a couple of slight drawbacks to the movie.
1. The music. It's great, but for just a couple of scenes, it seems inappropriately intense.
2. The plot requires a LARGE degree of intellect to parse properly. It may also require some understanding of human psychology (a 101 intro class would suffice) to really get some of the finer details. Also, unless you're very perceptive, you may not pick up on every layer in the first viewing (I picked up on so much shit that I thought my head would explode, and I STILL think I missed a couple of really interesting tie-ins). If you are not capable of really thinking about that kind of stuff, this may not be the movie for you, but I would still recommend it anyway.
2. (commentary) I was actually worried for a while that with all of the set-ups and potential tie-ins that I was simply making sweet madness out of nothing and that they were going to completely drop the ball. They didn't. In fact, ALL of my expectations were met exactly how I wanted them to be. It was practically flawless. Of particular note is the ethical dilemma posited at the end (it's subtle, but a clever person can catch it). It was just SO perfect! XD
SEE THIS FUCKING MOVIE! D:
That is all.
