Dear Intolerant Religious Conservatives,

Equality.

Who are you to decide that people are no longer equal simply because they are different than you. There was a time in our history when African Americans were not even allowed to vote. And ( Read more... )

If you fine gents are hunting for tolerance, you should probably avoid broad, intolerant terms like "Intolerant Religious Conservatives". Because while I, for example, am religious, and have conservative leanings, I really don't give a crap who marries who, because I personally feel that having marriage as a legal institution is ridiculous. I don't feel that this was a "you're not allowed to love ____" thing, but "you're not allowed to share medical insurance and get tax cuts" kind of thing. Which sucks all the same.

Where I was going with that is it's probably best to not paint with such broad strokes, because you alienate people who are supporting you. ^_^

I believe the opening line is perfect as it stands. It does not read "Intolerants, the religious and the conservative", but rather, those who apply to all 3 categories. It targets specifically those who bought into the propaganda of the politics of hate, the inequality and intolerance that was "protectmarriage.com", those being a group of activists who felt that religious morality should have some form of bearing on the law, and clouded the judgement of the issue.

Back in '92 I was attending bible college when "Measure 9" came on the ballot attempting to keep special rights out of the hands of homosexuals. Y'know, health insurance, protection from discrimination, that sort of thing. The people I went to school with were about half and half, for and against it. My ethics prof. set up a debate on the issue and told me to make the case for homosexual rights (prolly 'cause he knew I loved a good shit-storm).

I wrapped up the debate with a local story about a guy a couple of towns over who'd just gotten fired from his teaching job because of his life-style. He'd been open about his orientation and a group of concerned parents had petitioned the school board to have him removed, afraid that he'd influence or "recruit" the impressionable young people he worked with. Y'see, this teacher was a christian, and the kids needed protection from that. That woke a few of my listeners up.

When we protect other people's rights, we're protecting our own.

Thanks for sharing, bro.
