Before he realizes you're at -10.
Just a little tidbit from the Sentinels realm forums I felt like sharing. I'm making a brief re-appearance from my hiatus to write a brief post about Gary Gygax, who passed away yesterday. A man who inadvertently may have had more influence on my life than any other. I never knew much about the man, really, only heard his name in passing, and having seen him in that episode of Futurama (What will I use to fight off evil robots? "Here, take my +1 mace!") In retrospect, this saddens me, because I really wish I would have known more about Gary before his passing.
If feels odd to me, now, that his death has affected me so profoundly. It feels, in my heart, like a piece of modern culture has passed away. Gary was never a figurehead, and from what I've ascertained, he would never have wanted to be one... but he was influential, extremely so, and his influence is felt today in so many things around us. So many of my hobbies wouldn't exist without Gary- Warhammer 40k, World of Warcraft... and I never would have met some of my nearest and dearest friends without the that influence in gaming.
I am forced to imagine, in a strange and melancholy way, that were I 10 years older, this is how I might have felt at Jim Henson's passing, another man who was extremely influential in my life, though I was far too young at the time to realize it.
We'll miss you Gary. See you at that big DM table in the sky...
