Hello.
I haven't written in a while, I know. I get like that sometimes. I've had a lot going on what with the start of a new semester, some writing projects and life in general. I'll try to be better in the future, but make no promises. regardless, this is a project that I've wanted to do for a while now. If you're unfamiliar with the Warhammer 40,000 universe then you probably won't glean much from this. If you know a little bit, you might get a kick out of it. If you're a super geek you're going to think I'm spot on or have way too much time one my hands... or possibly both.
Lyrics are in bold. Comments by me are in regular font. Enjoy.
VNV Nation - The Farthest Star
---------------------------------------------------------
The will to greatness clouds the mind
The first line here, really sets the stage. it is the 31st millenium and mankind has embarked on a Great Crusade to reclaim the stars and all it's worlds in the name of Humanity. The galaxy belongs to man, and all alien scum will be wiped from it's face. This is our sacred task.
Consumes the senses, veils the signs
We each are meant to recognize.
Redeeming graces cast aside
Enduring notions, new found promise,
That the end will never come.
Ah yes, now it gets tricky. Though we don't know it yet, this crusade will never end. There will always be new enemies from within and without, and we have damned ourselves to an eternity of war amongst the stars. Ah, but we're getting ahead of ourselves. Here we must think though, is the promise that the end will never come? Or instead is there a new promise being made to humanity, and the lack of end a byproduct of it?
We live in times when all seems lost,
This line might reference either the 31st or 41st millenium, or both.
But time will come when we'll look back,
Upon ourselves and on our failings.
Now we are definitely in the 41st millinium, although looking backwards is not on option, and history is not something widely known.
Embrace the void even closer still,
Erase your doubts as you surrender everything:
The void is another name for the Warp, which is the faster-than-light travel method of the Warhammer universe. There is no individual. All mankind must glorify the Emperor, and embrace his crusade. It is your duty. It is your purpose.
We possess the power,
If this should start to fall apart,
To mend divides,
To change the world,
To reach the farthest star.
If we should stay silent.
If fear should win our hearts,
Our light will have long diminished,
Before it reaches the farthest star.
The whole chorus is saying here, that we cannot give up. That we cannot fail in our task, that we must stay vigilant. If we should fail, then we lose the galaxy to the mutant, the heretic, the alien, and even one false step will cause us to be forever lost. We will reclaim every lost world in the name of the Emperor and cement our place in the galaxy.
Wide awake in a world that sleeps
Enduring thoughts, enduring scenes.
The knowledge of what is yet to come.
From a time when all seems lost,
From a dead man to a world.
Without restraint, unafraid and free.
The God-Emperor of mankind is immortal, and from his resting place on the Golden Throne on Holy Terra he watches over humanity. His psychic presence omnipotent, holding back the warp-storms that would engulf the galaxy cutting off mankind from one another again, and his Astronomicon is the guiding beacon that continually makes warp travel possible. When the Emperor left the Warmaster Horus in charge of his mighty crusade, he retired to Terra to devices only he himself knows the secrets of. He holds that knowledge still, until such a time as his plan can achieve fruition, which many believe is still his ultimate intention, corpse God or not. The Emperor was struck down by Horus and interred onto the Throne at the moment of death, and it sustains his physical body to this day, keeping him neither dead nor truly alive.
We possess the power,
If this should start to fall apart,
To mend divides,
To change the world,
To reach the farthest star.
If we should stay silent.
If fear should win our hearts,
Our light will have long diminished,
Before it reaches the farthest star.
If we fall and break,
All the tears in the world cannot make
us whole
Again.
Again it must be stated- if we fail, humanity's light is extinguished.
We possess the power,
If this should start to fall apart,
To mend divides,
To change the world,
To reach the farthest star.
If we should stay silent.
If fear should win our hearts,
Our light will have long diminished,
Before it reaches the farthest star.
