A reminder of the
rough , should you need it.
The final illustration, scanned for me from a colour photocopy again by the lovely
funkyfilly, to whom I'd only recently been able to send it.
This was finished a while ago. The original is now with Templar (UK). It was created as a sample for them and probably won't end up in any publication, though I hear they may have something in the pipeline for me soon. Sharp eyed observers will not only notice the slight change in the background rocks for a better composition. Whilst approving the rough, the art director at Templar reminded me of the strangely prudish attitude of American children's publishers, who would be sure to balk at even the kind of chaste nudity with which Andromeda is here depicted (incidentally, I much prefer her in the rough as a better drawing upon the whole), so more hair had to be strategically blown to cover her one visible breast. They would even go so far as to find discomfort in Pegasus' genitalia (oh, indeed). As there was no way I could cover this, however, I simply had to avoid drawing it altogether. Many children's books published here get co-editions in the States, so we're always having to remember such issues, and although this sample is unlikely to end up in a book, it may still well be circulated among publishing houses.
