“Get up.”

Harry felt his bed slump drastically and opened his eyes, vision bleary.

“Why?” he grumbled, closing his eyes again as if that would make his Godfather disappear at this early hour.

“Why? What do you mean why?” Sirius tugged the blankets off him causing Harry to yelp from the sudden cold.

“Okay! Okay! I’m up!” he groped for his glasses and as he put them on Sirius swims into view, grinning broadly and acting like an overexcited puppy.

“Snow! There is snow! Real life, cold and flakey Christmas snow.”

Ever since Harry moved in with Sirius, he was constantly surprised at how Sirius had clearly never turned into a fully fledged adult, and that he was, for better or for worse, always there. When Harry woke in the morning and went to the kitchen, he’d be there making coffee, when Harry even thought about going to get groceries Sirius would somehow manage to make them go together. Having spent most of his recent years with Ron and Hermione by his side it wasn’t that he was a stranger to constant companionship, it’s that it came in the form of an adult figure.

“How much snow?” Harry asked suspiciously, this December had been unseasonably warm and Sirius had a mischievous glint in his eye.

“Why don’t you go and see for yourself?” Sirius grinned and headed off mysteriously downstairs. Harry sighed, giving a mental farewell to a few more hours of sleep. He pulled on some clothes that were lying nearby and walked sleepily down that stairs to the living room. Once the war had finished Sirius and Harry had moved into a place together in Suffolk, away from hustle and bustle. It was a small cottage, just about enough space for two people, surrounded by a small forest for privacy. Harry liked it, for now. It was peaceful, the village wasn’t too far to walk to if they needed to buy groceries or go to the pub. It was exactly what he needed right now. As soon as Harry stepped into the living room Sirius had thrust a scarf into his hands and was leading him outside.

Sirius opened the door and watched Harry’s face expectantly. It was snowing! But unlike normal snow that blanketed the entire landscape, this snow was just directly above their house, creating a small circular area of falling snow. Harry laughed.

“Real snow?” he teased, walking out into it in amazement. “How did you do this?”

Sirius smiled and ran a hand through his hair. “Oh you know, a bit of this, a bit of that.” He lowered his voice slightly, but obviously still pleased with himself. “Just wanted to make it feel a bit more like Christmas.”

“It’s wonderful!” Harry said, bending down to touch the snow settling on the ground. It melted beneath his fingertips. “How long will it last?”

“Should be 24 hours.”

Harry curled his fingers around the snow and threw a handful at Sirius that hit him right in the face. Sirius stood a moment, surprised before a predatory grin filled his face. After twenty minutes of an epic snowball battle, Harry realised the snow was falling increasingly heavily. It was now beginning to stick in his hair. Sirius realised at the same moment and took out his wand to try remedy the situation. It didn’t seem to help and they quickly hurried inside as it escalated into a full-blown blizzard.

Harry opened the main door and was greeted with a large waft of smoke.

“Uh…Sirius?”

“TURKEY!” Sirius yelled, plunging forward to the kitchen.

The smoke from the oven was filling the tiny kitchen and Harry just kept laughing as Sirius flapped his arms around manically before picking up his wand and stabbing the turkey furiously with it.

It’s only after half an hour, some failed spells and every available window open that Harry and Sirius sat side by side on the carpeted floor in front of the fireplace, eating salvageable turkey bits with their fingers and the snow falling against the windows. Harry grinned as Sirius poured a glass of firewhiskey for him.

“Definitely my best Christmas ever,” Harry said taking the whiskey and downing a shot, the liquid setting fire to his throat. Sirius’ face seems to break from how much he’s smiling. “Yeah, me too.”
