I've started watching Japanese stage plays for about 4 years and enjoyed Japanese stage plays so much. The enjoyment I got is very different from watching concerts.
Sadly, my home country, Singapore, has not been bringing in any Japanese stage plays ever since 蜷川幸雄 (Ninagawa Yukio) "Macbeth and Medea" since 1992 Arts Festival.
HOWEVER, yes, however, thanks to the 20th Anniversary of The Repertory Theatre,, they are bringing in 2 Japanese stage plays in the upcoming months! Yes!!!
Firstly from 30th to 31st August, 春琴 (Shun Kin) will be showing at Esplande Theatre. This is a play based on Japanese story "A Portrait of Shun-kin" and "In Praise of Shadows" but directed by British theatre, Sumon McBurney's Complicite. It has been shown in Japan and Taiwan about two to three years back and will be having a re-run in Japan next month. 深津絵里 (Fukatsu Eri) is the main lead of this play.
Then, the other one which I jumped with joy when I knew that it will be showing here when I saw the chirashi in Japan. That is Ninagawa Yukio's play ムサシ (Musashi) London, New York version!
I have watched Ninagawa san's two plays and well, kind of become his fan now. Especially when it comes to Shakespeare play.
Ninagawa san had a heart by pass surgery earlier this year. When he stood at the first rehearsal for Henry IV (his first stage play after recovering from the surgery), he told the cast & staff "I have died once and reborn now. So I must do something different from what I had done in the past." Oh my god! Salute!!! I want to watch more of Ninagawa san's plays!!!
Anyway, back to Musashi. It will be shown from 8th to 9th November at Esplande Theatre. 藤原竜也 (Fujiwara Tatsuya) will still play the lead of Miyamoto Musashi while his opponent is played by 溝端淳平(Mizobata Junpei) this time. My favorite stage play actor, 吉田鋼太郎 (Yoshida Kohtalo) will be coming to Singapore too!
My friends have watched both stage plays and said they are interesting!
Gosh, I'm so excited for the upcoming months!
