Episode 4 Minhyuk, personally, doesn’t understand why this is even something to waste time thinking about-much less why this is something to then waste time discussing this in the morning, before school’s even started, before the bell to go to homeroom has even rung. It’s not like Minhyuk will really be able to remember this conversation anyway since he was up until late hours last night trying to get Jonghyun to not fail the chemistry test they have today.
“Hyung, are you listening?” Kyung asks irritably.
“Definitely,” Minhyuk says, bolting up right in his seat (he was previously slumped over Taeil’s history textbook).
Jaehyo looks up from copying the answers to a set of pre-calculus problems from Taeil. “Don’t bother, Park Kyung,” he says from across the table. “Can’t stop a player from playing.”
Jiho throws a bread roll wrapper at Jaehyo. “Shut the fuck up and stop trying to sound badass, hyung,” he says cheerfully.
Jaehyo chucks the wrapper back-most likely aiming for Jiho’s face, but missing and hitting Taeil’s face instead, to which Taeil doesn’t take kindly to and grabs his math homework out of Jaehyo’s hands. “Copy someone else’s homework,” Taeil says, miffed, and holds the piece of graph paper to his chest.
Jiho falls over laughing into Kyung’s lap (face down into Kyung’s lap) and Jaehyo can only stare, open-mouthed at probably what he considers to be injustice and Minhyuk considers to be good fortune as Taeil slides the math homework now over to Minhyuk so he can copy the answers that he missed because of the emergency study session last night with Jonghyun.
“No, but seriously, Minhyuk-hyung,” Kyung says, trying to shove off a lapful of Jiho, “did you hear me?”
Minhyuk nods once as he bites the tip of his pencil before writing down another line of equations from Taeil’s paper. “Yeah,” he says, “I have to stop hitting on Kikwangie and consider that first year kid’s feelings or whatever.”
Taeil stops suddenly in the middle of breaking a doughnut (that he stole from Jaehyo and refuses to give back or share on account of Jaehyo hitting him with the wrapper Jiho had thrown). “What’s his name?” he asks, squinting at Kyung. “He’s the really tall one, right? Do you guys know what his name is yet?”
Jiho shrugs. “Fuck me,” he says. “I still haven’t memorized the captain’s name-I just know his last name because it’s on the back of his jersey.”
Kyung grins. “Right? The only one I know for sure is Junhyung-sunbae after-like-the sixth time he walked in on us last week.”
“Christ, that was amazing,” Jiho sits up a little straighter, clapping his hands and laughing. “His face-it was like-fuck, it was the best. But,” he taps Kyung’s stomach lightly with the back of his hand, “I think he was kind of turned on. Didn’t he look kind of turned on to you?”
“You’re all horrible people,” Jaehyo sniffs.
“Okay, hyung,” Kyung rolls his eyes, and intertwines fingers with Jiho.
“So no one knows what the tall first year’s name is?” Taeil summarizes, dusting the powdered sugar from the doughnut from his hands. “Because it’s kind of awkward when he says hi to me ‘cause I’m the hyung and I just kind of-don’t talk to him back because I don’t know his name yet.”
“Ask one of the other guys,” Jiho suggests.
Taeil blinks-squints. “I don’t know their names yet either.”
“Oh my God,” Jaehyo says, “we’ve been on the team for like three weeks, you guys.”
“Oh wait-okay wait,” Jiho suddenly says, loudly and holding a hand into the air (the hand that isn’t interlocked with Kyung’s). “I remember one of them-okay, the really hot one-the one that’s, like, a babe-okay, that one’s Hyunseung-sunbae. Okay, there. I got it. I remember because Junhyung-sunbae was in charge of my detention last Wednesday and I asked him if Hyunseung-sunbae was single and if he could be my hyung, and Junhyung-sunbae started like throwing staples at me.”
Minhyuk looks up at those names. “He’s celibate,” he offers. “Jonghyunnie told me. They’re-like-monks. Junhyung-sunbae and Hyunseung-sunbae, I mean.”
Kyung wrinkles his nose. “That’s depressing.”
“Right?” Minhyuk agrees sympathetically.
Jiho looks at Kyung. “We need to make-out more in front of them,” he says. “So we can make them not celibate anymore.”
“Yah,” Jaehyo kicks the leg of Jiho’s chair. “You two aren’t that hot, okay. Stop thinking you can turn everyone just because you have the guts to suck face in public.”
“Stop being cranky just because we offered to let you join, but you were too busy being all straight and shit,” Jiho says, kicking the leg of Jaehyo’s chair right back. “And we’re refined, okay, we don’t suck face.”
“Speaking of sucking face,” Taeil says, “where’s Yukwonnie?”
Jiho and Kyung exchange glances-Jaehyo then joins in that glance exchange, and Minhyuk feels Taeil’s gaze immediately fall on him. “He’s with some sunbae, that’s all I know,” Minhyuk says coolly-calmly-indifferently.
“Do you want me to text him or-” Jiho begins.
“Why’d you do that?” Minhyuk cuts him off, still without looking up from copying down the math homework. “What if he’s getting fucked? It’s not like he can’t take care of himself so leave him alone.”
He really doesn’t understand.
He can never understand why they act as if Minhyuk needs to know where Yukwon is every moment of the day because Minhyuk really doesn’t. Yukwon isn’t Minhyuk’s the way Kikwang is that first year’s, or Jiho is Kyung’s and Kyung is Jiho’s. Minhyuk and Yukwon are just friends the way any of the others are friends and, personally, Minhyuk thinks that they all-especially Kyung-just need to stop prodding around in the way Minhyuk runs things. If Jaehyo, being Minhyuk’s friend for years upon years, can learn to leave Minhyuk alone, then so can the others.
And if they don’t, then there’s not going to be much of a friendship.
