He also knows himself well enough to know that when he does hear them, it sets off some internal panic button that makes him want to flee. Unbridled physical need, he can handle.
Love… real love from someone else… well… he’s not sure he’d know how to accept it.
He’s not sure he’s ever had the chance to accept it before.
He’s afraid of accepting it, only to have her see through to the truth - that he doesn’t deserve it.

They exchange a loaded glance, looking away uncomfortably.
Neither one of their plans seems to be working out so well at the moment.
When Marshall sets the example with his leap to the neighboring rooftop, it’s just the inspiration they need. Giddy with exhilaration from taking that leap, laughing, hearts pounding as they exultantly embrace, something subtly but surely changes between them.
Maybe it’s time for a new plan.

They’re all enjoying the neighbors’ hot tub, grateful that they’re out of town, when Robin wordlessly grabs his hand and leads him across the roof. She knows they all know what’s going on, but she doesn’t care anymore.
They’re barely through the window when she pushes him against the wall, her mouth hungrily seeking his. He pulls away only when he’s gasping for air, eyes wide as they meet hers.
“Robin… I…”
“Don't. Don’t talk. Just…”
She doesn’t have to finish. He understands. He gives her a soft smile, looking a little awed, before leaning in to kiss her again.
