Sheena knelt on the green-carpeted floor of Nadine's bedroom floor, grasping the well-worn Magic 8 Ball in her hand. A frown spread across her face, reflecting the frustration and disappointment of the toy's constant unsatisfying results over the last half hour. Her other hand supported her head, balled up into an unfamiliar fist under her chin, while Nadine lay sprawled across the floor across the room, skipping songs on the stereo and examining the Ball with a mixture of skepticism and annoyance in her eyes.

It's tricky when / You feel someone / Has done something on your behalf

"Come on, Sheena," Nadine started, barely bothering to conceal the attitude and slight drunkenness in her voice. "You've been trying FOREVER. Give it a rest."

"No!" Sheena half-shouted, her squeaky voice faltering slightly. Her bottom lip started to tremble as she closed her eyes and violently began to shake the Ball again. "It's going to work, it has to work," she muttered, more to herself than Nadine. Nadine suppressed a frustrated groan and turned the volume on the stereo down, quieting Björk's emotional lament on the stereo so Sheena could -- yet again -- ask her desperate, hopeless question.

With a palm full of stars / I throw them like dice

"Magic 8 Ball ... will he come back?"

"You're wasting your time," Nadine snorted, another splash of alcohol rushing down her esophagus.

"... Ask Again later." Sheena's bottom lip quivered with disappointment. "Should we try the Ouija Board again?" She asked, looking at Nadine with hope shining in her eyes, searching for an answer.

Repeatedly / Until the desired constellation appears

Nadine sat upright and stared across the room. There was no way she believed in any of this; none of it was real. She could not capture a definitive Yes or No for Sheena. All she could do was pretend to understand, pretend someday the Ball would make any sort of difference. This scene was common, the two had run through it at least a dozen time in recent months. Eugene, Sheena's first boyfriend, had moved away six months ago, right after his seventeenth birthday. "To New York," Sheena had cried to Nadine the night he left, hugging her perhaps a wee bit harder than she should have. Thereafter, every time Sheena had a particularly devastating day, Nadine was prepared with pints of Ben & Jerry's and sappy movies. And Sheena always brought that damned Magic 8 Ball.

The Grey Goose was Nadine's relatively new contribution to the ritual.

"No," Nadine replied softly, crossing the room and wrapping an arm around her friend, her best friend. Sheena buried her head in Nadine's shoulder -- another tradition -- and cried. Nadine patted her head, her back, her arms, whispering "You'll be just fine"s and "You're gonna be alright"s, when Sheena looked up at her.

"I'm not alright," she whispered back, barely audible underneath Björk's haunting voice. "How can I be alright?"

How am I going to make it right?

Nadine shushed her, but Sheena lifted her head and stared right into Nadine's dark brown eyes. The music was barely loud enough to be heard from the other side of the bedroom door, but it pounded in Nadine's ears and she could feel her own pulse quickening as she kissed Sheena's temple and smoothed her hair. Still, Sheena stared at her, widening her eyes slightly and turning her head to the side. All Nadine could do was stare back.

How am I going to make it right?
