Hi Brandie:
Good to hear from you. Honestly, the way it looks, I'm probably not comin back
to teach 275 in the spring. I came down with pneumonia which settled into this
nasty flu-like thing and (fortunately) seems to now be tapering off, but slowly. I originally returned to Santa Fe at end of september to rehab.
HOwever my dr's are telling me that the conservative move is to stick here and not
risk a relapse (which I'm told would make a picnic out of what happened the first time around!) The winter in Boise is considerably more harsh than here in Santa Fe,
so as much as I really DO wanna return and preside over the Calc 2 and Calc 3
sections, I think the most prudent decision is to play it safe and stick around these
parts.
How has the Calc 2 class been going ? IF you like the instructor who replaced me,
perhaps he will agree to teach the Calc 3 in the spring. But i really am out of the loop for whatever decision the dept and chair makes as far as a faculty replacement.
Anyway, I feel terrible about this whole mess. I've never really experienced any illness that has lasted nearly this long, so this has been tough to accept (I'm not a good sport about being laid up!!). I really enjoyed our afternoon Calc group, and as depressed as I've been not bein able to continue with the course, it has been quite heartening and uplifting that stds have e-mailed me expressing preference for enrolling in the section I would be teaching. Nice to know that, for whatever reason,
we all had some sorta Calculus rapport! (as strange as such a thing might sound) A lot of instructors are somewhat aloof or disaffected in this regard, but I'm a softie for wanting my classes to feel they are being included in the learning process, not condescended to, entertained, and most of all to know that their success and positive experience matters greatly to me. You can't win with everyone in pushing this agenda, but I always feel the effort returns dividends (I model this attitude
on what I couldn't stand about my instructors in math undergrad at UCLA -- a lot
of em worked as great examples of how NOT to instruct !)
So sorry I can't help you out w/spring enrollment. I have no clue what the dept will decide to do (I know they ain't happy with having to regroup at this extent),
Please feel free to keep in touch tho, and if you need any online help this semester or next, please do not hesitate to drop me a line and I'd be more than happy to put on my Calc therapist's hat (?) and give you feedback in whatever form works for you (BTW, I've taught the course many times before at diff schools, so I have many versions of Calc 2 final exams and so forth that may prove worthwhile as study aids for this semester - if this interests you, lemme know and I can e-mail back as attachments).
If we don't x e-mail paths before the holidays, have a happy thxgiving, merry
Christmas/Chanukkah/Winter Solstace and a truly great New Year/ 2006. I enjoyed having you in class and wish the best for you in the future.
Best,
gregg
