To the class of 2007:
Never settle for second best. It is the moral of this essay and it is cliche, but it is very true. If you want to go to college then go to the best school you can get in to. It might be costly, but the benefit of being true to yourself is so much greater then that of four years spent in a place you would prefer not to be.
Don't let anyone else make you happy. If you had a small device that controlled your emotions (one button for pleasure, one button for depression, etc) would you give that device to anyone? Even your best friends or closest relatives? How about your worst enemy? You would keep it to yourself and guard it. This must be the case.
Believe in yourself. Ultimately, the choice is yours to make. Your parents are not living your life for you, you friends aren't living your life for you. You are You.
If you want to be a stay at home mother or father, then do it. If you want to be a lawyer, then do it. Don't be ashamed of your hearts desire. There is no shame in being the stay at home mother, just like there is no inherit glory to being the lawyer.
Don't look to please everyone. It is alright to be selfish in order to achieve your hearts desire and goal.
Don't shut out those who love you, because if you do and there comes a time when you really need someone you will find that you have noone. Physically and emotionally you must be independent.
Don't ever be a 'senior.'
You can only control you, and your education is a big part of who you are. Since you were born, your ability to learn has distinguished you from other babies, other siblings, other lovers, other friends. Learn from everything that you do.
Don't touch the opposite sex. It will only lead to nicknames and reputations that you can never shake. If you must touch the opposite sex, name your car after the experience.
To the class of 2008-09:
Don't look up the upper classmen. They are no wiser then you will be when you are an upper classmen. Maybe the human race will become wiser in the next two years, but I doubt it. Hold on to that blossoming feeling of spunk and individuality. Don't do drugs. If you feel the need to kill your brain cells then ride behind a mosquito repellant truck. Visit your relatives. You will want to branch out from your close family unit and start to get your own identity within your family. Don't try to hard to impress other students. They are trying to impress you and will hate you when you succeed. Be a social drinker. You don't want to look like a light-weight when you go to the graduation after parties.
