Romeo and Juliet rehearsal has begun. I must confess, every time I read this play I desperately try to appreciate Romeo and Juliet, and each time, despite my efforts, I come to the conclusion that they are rash, horny, pathetic, teens with an extreme lack of self control.
My arguments are these:
1) Romeo is fickle and turns from Rosaline only because she won't put out
2) Juliet kisses a complete stranger the very day she's told to consider Paris for marriage
3) Romeo and Juliet only marry to have sex
4) Romeo and Juliet only meet 4 times throughout the play
5) Romeo doesn't even ask the boys what they think about the matter
6) And finally they decide to kill themselves over each other, seriously, WTF?
Thoughts anyone? I'm willing to hear your case, but I feel that as a Rosaline myself, I shan't be moved.
However, I still love the play because Tybalt is about as Corleone as Italians come and Mercutio . . . O' Mercutio--who doesn't love him? He's the only one with any common sense and he's as crazy as they come.
