Chapter 4:

Luke slowly rose to his feet. He needed to get in touch with Dr. Stevens, to let him know Reid had woken up. He walked to the nurses' desk. “Hey, Becca, can you call Dr. Stevens for me? Reid just woke up.”

“Ooh, Luke, that’s great. I’ll call him right away.” When Becca ended the call, she turned to Luke again. “He will be here in about thirty minutes. Luke, are you okay? You don’t look so swell.”

“I’m fine, just a little tired. Thanks, Becca.”

As he walked in the direction of Reid’s room, he picked up his phone and started to dial.

“Hey, Luke, what’s going on?”

“Katie, Reid’s awake.”

“Oh my god, that’s great!”

“Yeah, it is,” Luke said quietly.

“What’s wrong Luke? You don’t sound happy.”

“I’m happy he’s awake, I really am, it’s just-can you come over? I’ll explain when you’re here.”

“I’ll be there as fast as I can, okay?”

“Thanks, Katie.”

“You’re welcome, Luke.” And with that, she hung up.

Luke slid down the wall in front of Reid’s room, feeling numb. Sure, he was really happy and relieved that Reid was awake, but . . . Reid didn’t remember them, the best three years of Luke’s life. Luke knew Reid felt the same way, but Reid didn’t remember a single thing. How was Luke supposed to feel about that?

It wasn’t long when he heard footsteps coming his way. He looked up and saw Katie walking toward him. Luke jumped to his feet and ran to Katie, pulling her into a hug.

“Hey, sweetie, what’s wrong; why aren’t you in there with Reid?”

“He doesn’t remember, Katie; what am I supposed to do?” Luke asked, and for the first time since Reid woke up, he started to cry. He cried like a little child, and Katie, who was really confused, just held him tightly and whispered words of comfort in his ear.

After several minutes, Luke started to calm down, and he pulled slowly out of the hug. “Sorry, Katie,” Luke sniffed.

“Okay, don’t apologize. Just tell me what happened, okay?”

Just then Dr. Stevens walked their way. “Luke, what are you doing in the hallway? I thought you would be in there celebrating.”

“He doesn’t want me in there,” Luke said while swallowing hard. He held his hand up when Katie started to interrupt. “He doesn’t remember us, me and him. When he woke up, he was so mad at me; he thought I was there to make sure Noah’s surgery was still on.”

“No,” Katie gasped and grabbed Luke’s arm.

“What’s going on, Doctor, why doesn’t he remember the last three years of his life?” Luke asked.

“I don’t know, Luke,” Dr. Stevens replied honestly. “There could be several reasons. I’m going in to run some tests, and when I’m done I’ll fill you in, okay?

“Okay, I’ll be here.”

Dr. Stevens turned and went into Reid’s room. “So, Dr. Oliver, I see that you decided to join us mortals again.”

“You’re the butcher who cracked open my scull?” Reid growled. “No wonder I have such a headache.”

“Well, I see you still have your winning personality, so I’ve must done something right.” Dr. Stevens couldn’t suppress a grin.

Reid just scowled.

“I’m just going to ask you some questions, okay?”

Reid just shrugged his shoulders.

“What’s your name?”

Reid rolled his eyes. “Dr. Oliver; isn’t that what you just called me?”

Dr. Stevens ignored Reid’s comment and went on. “What city are we in?”

“Oakhell, Ilinois.”

Dr. Stevens grinned at that.

“What year are we living in?”

“2010.”

Dr. Stevens’ head snapped up from his clipboard, and he looked at Reid with concern spreading over his face.

Reid noticed it. “What’s with the look, Doc; what’s wrong?”

Dr. Stevens shook his head and picked up his penlight. “Can you follow the light with your eyes for me?”

Reid crossed his arms over his chest. “Cut the bullshit. I know that look. Just tell me what it is because I’m going to figure it out-genius, remember?” he said while tapping his finger against the side of his head.

Dr. Stevens sighed deeply and sat down in the chair next to the bed. “The answer to one of my questions concerns me.”

“What, my name isn’t Reid Oliver? Just tell me what it is, Doc.”

“The year we are living in isn’t 2010.”

“Holy crap, I slept through New Year’s-just how long was I out of it?”

“Eight days.”

“Eight days? That doesn’t make any sense. It’s March. What the hell is going on, and cut the crap.” Reid was getting really frustrated now.

“It’s 2013.”

Reid gasped for air. “W-what! What are you talking about; what kind of joke are you pulling here? Was this your idea or did the nurses put you up to this? ‘Let’s make fun of the guy while he’s in a hospital bed.’”

“I wish it was a joke, Dr. Oliver, but it is 2013, and it looks like you have a type of amnesia.”

“How did this happen? What did you do to my brain to mess it up like this?” Reid almost screamed as panic overtook his body.

“Just calm down.”

“Calm down! Easy for you to say; you didn’t lose three years of your life!” Reid shouted, his breathing becoming shallow. He tried to get up. He needed to get the hell out of there.

“You need to calm down, Dr. Oliver, or else we have to sedate you,” Dr. Stevens said while pushing Reid back into his pillow.

Reid took some deep breaths and felt himself calm down. “Just tell me something, Doctor: if it’s 2013, why the hell am I not in Dallas? Why am I still in this town that time forgot?”

“I think it’s best that other people explain that to you. I’m going to check your vitals now, and first thing in the morning I will order a CT-scan, to see if there is any damage, okay?”

When Dr. Stevens finished examining Reid, he nodded toward the door. “There are some people out there. They’d like to see you. Are you up for that?”

“Hell yes if that means I’m going to get some answers. Bring them in.”

“Don’t overdo it; you’ve suffered serious head trauma, so don’t take on too much.” And with that, Dr. Stevens left the room.

Luke was at the doctor’s side immediately with Katie on his heels. “Well, what’s wrong with him?”

“His vitals are strong so that’s good, but he suffers from some kind of amnesia. I’m going to order a CT-scan in the morning, and then we go from there. There seems to be no further brain damage, though.”

“Does he know it’s 2013?”

“Yes, and he’s not taking it very well, I’m afraid. He wants some answers, and I think it’s best that you give them to him, Luke.”

“Me! He hates me right now. No, I think it’s best Katie goes in there first; she’s his friend and he trusts her.”

“Yeah, that does make sense. We were friends even back then,” Katie said.

“Okay. I’ll be in my office trying to get some sleep before my early shift starts, but if there’s any change or you have a question, get a nurse to page me,” Dr. Stevens said.

“Can we tell him everything that happened the last few years, or should we hold some things back?” Katie asked.

“Well, I know he’s not going to take no for an answer, so just answer his questions honestly and try to keep him as calm as possible. If he gets too agitated, let the nurse page me and we will sedate him.” Dr. Stevens looked at Luke with a kind smile. “Do you have any other questions for me?”

Luke shook his head. “No, thank you, Doctor.”

Dr. Stevens nodded his head and walked away.

“Okay” Katie said, “I’m going in there, but I’ll be back here as soon as possible, okay?”

Luke just nodded his head, fresh tears filling his eyes.

Katie cupped his cheek. “Would you like it if I call somebody to be here for you?”

“No, I’ll be fine. You just go in there and try not to freak him out too much.” Luke gave her a wobbly smile.

Reid was still trying to wrap his mind around what he had just learned when there was a knock on the door and Katie’s head poked in.

“Katie!” Reid exclaimed. “Thank god, something that makes sense. Well, are you going to get your ass in here, or are you just going to stand there?”

“Oh, Reid,” Katie choked out, fighting back the lump in here throat. She flew to his bed and pressed a firm kiss on his forehead. “We were so worried about you,” she sniffed, not able to hold back her tears.

“Oy, Goldilocks, enough with the tears. You’re not the one with a massive gap in his memory,” Reid said, trying to light the mood.

“It’s not funny, Reid. We didn’t know if you were going to wake up, so don’t even pretend for one minute that this is a joke,” Katie said, slight anger in her voice, thinking of Luke, who was a nervous wreck on the other side of the door.

“Hey, hey,” Reid shushed, “I’m sorry, Katie, but look, I’m okay. I’m fine. I haven’t looked in a mirror yet but I know I still look drop dead gorgeous,” Reid said with a wink.

Katie couldn’t help but laugh at that. “It’s good to see you’re still your charming self.”

Reid was glad he caused a smile on his friend’s face. “Okay, now that that’s sorted out, sit down and tell me what I’m still doing in Oakhell.”

Katie sat down and looked at Reid. “You’ve got your own neuro wing here, built and designed to your wishes, and you’re the Chief of Staff of Memorial.”

“I-I’m Chief of Staff of this poor excuse for a hospital,” Reid choked out. “How did that happen?”

“The new wing has brought a lot of prestige to the hospital,” Katie said. “It’s one of the top facilities in the country. People fly in from everywhere to come here.”

“Where the hell did the money for this wing come from? Did Bob have a sock hidden with a few million dollars in it?”

“No, Henry donated his inheritance, and the rest was donated by the Snyder Foundation.” Katie began to feel a little nervous now that Luke’s name was brought up.

“The Snyder Foundation-Luke Snyder runs that, right?”

“Right.”

“Why the hell would he do that? He hates my guts.”

“Well, he did it for Memorial. The hospital could really use it.”

Reid shook his head. “No, he did it for Mr. Mayer so he could stay here for his surgery. I mean, that’s the only reason I can think of.”

“Maybe Noah had something to do with it, but he wasn’t the only reason. Luke really wanted to support the hospital.”

“How is Mr. Mayer doing, by the way? I assume he had his surgery years ago?”

“Noah is fine; you restored his eyesight perfectly.”

“Of course I did,” Reid snorted. “Then what the hell is he still doing here? I thought he would be in L.A. or New York by now, living his dream.”

“Noah moved to L.A. about three years ago,” Katie said. She started to shift in her chair. She became pretty nervous now, but she had to bite the bullet. She had to do this for Luke.

Reid was confused as hell now. “So then why was Mr. Snyder at my bedside when I woke up? Why isn’t he in L.A. with Mr. Mayer?” Reid wasn’t sure if was going to like the answer. The look on Katie’s face worried him.

Katie was looking down at her shoes now as she continued shifting in her chair.

“Katie! Answer me. Why was Mr. Snyder in my room?”

“His name is Mr. Snyder-Oliver now,” Katie blurted out before putting her hand over her mouth, a look of shock on here face. She couldn’t believe she just blurted it out like that.

Reid’s heart stopped for a second, and he started to breathe really heavily. “What did you say?”

Katie looked at him, putting here hand back in her lap. “You heard me; you and Luke have been married for almost a year now.”

“You’re lying, that’s insane.” Reid began to pant. He was suddenly having trouble catching his breath.

“Hey, Reid,” Katie said as she stood up, concern all over her face. “You need to calm down or else I’ve got to call the nurse.”

Reid couldn’t calm down. He was having a full-blown panic attack. How did this happen? Yes, he had to admit that Luke was easy on the eye, but how exactly did that translate to being married to the guy? This had to be some kind of joke.

“Reid, hey Reid, stay with me here,” he heard Katie say. “I’m going to call a nurse now.” Reid grabbed her wrist and shook his head. “N-n-no, please don’t,” he pleaded, still trying to catch his breath.

He let go of Katie’s wrist as his breathing returned to normal.

“Where is he? Is he still here?” Reid asked, his voice still a little shaky.

“Yeah, he’s just outside the room, waiting for me to tell him how you took it.”

“I want him in here. I need to talk to him.”

“Reid, I don’t think that’s a good idea. I think you should rest for a bit. You just had major surgery seven days go.”

Reid snorted again. “Like I can rest now. I mean it, Katie, bring him in here.”

Katie sighed but nodded her head. “Try to stay calm, okay? This isn’t easy for Luke.”

“Yeah, yeah, will you bring him in already?”

Katie stood with her hands firmly on her hips. “I’m not going to let him in here until you promise me you’ll go easy on him, do you hear me, Reid Oliver? The last few days have been hell for Luke, and now this. He doesn’t need you to lash out at him on top of all of this.”

Reid rolled his eyes, but when he saw the stern look on Katie’s face, he bit back a snarky comment and nodded his head.

“Okay then.” Katie bent down and kissed Reid on the cheek. “Good to have you back, Doc.” She turned around and left the room.

“I don’t know, Katie, do you think it’s a good idea?” Luke asked while pacing back and forth in the corridor.

“He wants to see you, Luke. You cant avoid him forever.”

“I know, but he was so mad at me, Katie.”

“Luke, he thought you were there because of Noah. He knows that it isn’t Noah you’re here for but him. And yes, he freaked out, but he wants to see you Luke, and he promised to behave,” Katie said. She grabbed Luke’s arm and cupped his cheek. “You can do this; you’re going to be fine.”

Luke just nodded and took a deep breath before he opened the door to Reid’s room. He slowly walked in and closed the door behind him. “Hey,” Luke said, his gaze on his shoes as he scratched his neck, not knowing what to do.

“Well, are you just going to stand over there or are you going to sit down over here?” Reid barked, instantly regretting his harsh tone when he saw a flash of pain in Luke’s eyes. “Come sit down,” he said, a little gentler now.

Luke sat down in the chair next to Reid’s bed, his eyes still on the floor.

“So we’re married, huh?”

“Yeah, we are.” Luke finally looked up at Reid. “Kind of surprising, huh?” Luke tried to smile but only a sob escaped his throat.

“Yeah, it kind of is. The transformation from hating each other to being married is a bit much to take in,” Reid said, suppressing a yawn.

“Hey, why don’t you get some sleep? It’s been kind of crazy since you woke up. I’ll be here when you wake and you can ask me what you want.”

Reid nodded and fell asleep immediately, feeling strangely calm with Luke by his side. He didn’t feel the soft kiss Luke pressed on his lips anymore.
