What can I say? I'm really bad about keeping up with LiveJournal. I find it is much faster/simpler to throw a quick status update on Facebook than come over here and actually write something lengthy. In any case, as long as I'm dropping in, here are a few Things of Note in Hildy's life:
I've been selling short stories like crazy over the past several months, which is all good. Just got the name of the next anthology from Esther Friesner, which includes my story, "Sappy Meals" -- Fangs for the Mammaries. No, I'm not kidding. That's really it. I'll list the various other anthos as they come out/are about to come out.
Lest you think all is wine and roses in my writing career, I received two rejections that have me down: one for my book, which I submitted to Pyr's unagented manuscript open session and one from Dragon*Con. Poop and double-poop.
Space and Time is open for submissions again. So far, I like what's been passed up to me, although one reminded me a little too closely of a recent big Hollywood SF hit (go on, guess which one). We're opening more often in 2010, for shorter bursts, which should help us speed up our acceptance/rejection notices and keep the whole process more manageable for my editorial staff.
Issue 110 is shipping out Monday of next week, so if you're waiting for your copy, it should show up within the next week or so (depending on how far away from the Central US you live. It's a really good one, if I do say so myself (and I do).
I had the coolest encounters the week before last. The first was when I went to Peter Straub's reading at KGB in NYC. There were lots of notable personages from my weird and wacky publishing world, including Doug Cohen (Realms of Fantasy), JJ Adams (LightSpeed), Richard Bowes(multi-award winning author), Ellen Datlow (multi-award winning editor) and many others of equal coolness. The readings, one by Daryl Gregory and then by Peter, were really enjoyable and afterward, a bunch of us went out for easily some of the best Chinese food I've ever had. Thanks goes to Gordon Linzner for helping us pick out some really yummy dishes, including lotus root in garlic sauce (incredible!).
Later that same week, I went to PSFS to have dinner with Jeffrey Ford and introduce his talk. What a cool dude! He's a great speaker -- fun, funny, and fascinating. If you've never had the pleasure of hearing him and get the opportunity, take it! You'll learn a lot and have a great time.
Then, of course, a thousand feet of snow landed on NJ and I was stuck in the house with a restless pre-teen and my poor father, who was wishing he'd never left Florida, for most of this week. I shoveled a foot of snow off the driveway singlehandedly, as the hubby was off making history in Washington, D.C. Ah, well, at least I got a good workout in!
The week ahead: need to revise one story for an editor, complete and submit another, get Dad to the airport and home to FL, visit Mom at the home, and about a zillion other daily activities. For tonight, though, I'm going upstairs and watching a Buffy the Vampire Slayer rerun. Adieu!
