I'm so tired and yet I hardly did a thing today. Well, except being on the edge of my seat watching skating and trying to write a short story for my writing workshop. At least I managed to finish the short story.
But Worlds, man. It's killing me.
So intense. So, so intense.
Last night I was all up in arms about the men's free skate. Had both Eurosport and my Universal Sport feed on and was mostly like a headless chicken in a trance. Just after watching Adrain Schultheiss skate (
his routine is very entertaining and I totally recommend it for even those who aren't into skating), I had dash off to pick up my niece. I was really glad I didn't miss Adam Rippon. He was so lovely. Like his short programme better though (the music that is) but he was great. Missed the first skater in the last group, Jeremy Abbott, and maybe that's for the best, poor guy assplanted badly, I gather. Poor dear. Then Joubert lands two quads and still doesn't score higher than Patrick Chan? What the hell? According to the skating gossip Chan was overscored to assure Canada three spots for the male figure skating at next Worlds. Politics, politics. But Daisuke Takahashi totally brought it and brought the gold to Japan. Good for him 'cause he was so good. I do like his short programme better though.
I think the biggest upset in the scoring in the men's free skate was Michal Brezina. He should have scored more and be on the podium.
Then there were the ladies' short programme this afternoon. Aye, aye, aye. How on earth is Caroline Kostner fourth? Probably because she's Italian and Worlds are in Torino. It was literally painful to watch her skate because she was clearly not enjoying it at all. But the big upset is Kim Yu-Na in seventh. Just what the hell happened? 'Cause she opened with triple-triple jumps and then just like all the wind fell from her sails. That failed spin and the spiral sequence. Poor girl. This is arguably the best female skater in the world and anyone who saw her at the Olympics can attest to that. She's like she was born with skates on her feet. It will be interesting to see whether she pulls through in the free skate. She mentioned something about her foot in one of the interviews but she was clearly so shaken up she wasn't really participating in the interview.
Mao Asada has a chance of the gold now but I fear "The Bells of Moscow" will drown her like they did at the Olympics. I mean, hooray for her triple axels but that music is terrible and Johnny Weir agrees with me!
'Cause if Mirai Nagasu skates as well as she did today, she could have the gold in her bag. Her long programme is very good as it's suits her and is judging friendly. I mean, she's trained by Frank Carroll and he knows how to turn out the champions. Plus she's the cutest thing ever (don't believe me? See the
video).
Gosh, this will be so exciting tomorrow.
Then there's the ice dance and I listened to the very good commentary from Tanith Belbin and Ben Agosto on the Universal Sport feed. They are nice and eloquent and were very much into the journey the skaters were taking us on. Probably has something to do with them being newly retired ice dancers themselves. And like they said, there were two performances that stood out. As I said when I talked about the original dance, Virtue & Moir and Davis & White are in another league. It was kind of awesome to see them on the podium 'cause the two pairs are training partners and friends. They hugged and Scott (Moir) and Charlie (White) fist-bumped. It was totally heartening.
But Faiella and Scali were pretty darn good as well and so were the Kerrs (even though I don't get the Kerrs' routine with Linkin' Park and all). But maybe I'm just a sucker for reverse lifts (when the girl lifts the guy).
I'm glad that while they got the silver overall, Davis & White won the free dance 'cause they gave it 200% (watch
the video, people, and especially that insane lift towards the end).
I wish I could find a link to a video with Virtue's & Moir's free dance from the Olympics because that one was sublime. The Worlds one was almost perfection except a tiny bump with the twizzles. (The
video of it is well worth the watch).
Whoa, I rambled. Now I'm gonna go off and look at a fabulous Johnny picspam someone posted on
