I've got an opinion or two

Jun 05, 2009 12:06

I offered you the chance to ask me about fandom opinion yesterday. Some of you jumped on the offer. The offer still stands if you like.

But here are the answers to the questions I've been asked so far.

xkelorosiamano asked me about my opinion of Wincest.

I was going to write this long arse answer about Wincest but when I managed to bore myself with what I had written, I decided to make it shortish and sweet.

I see it. I saw it pretty much right away when I started getting into Supernatural (last December). While I normally shy away from incest pairings, there’s something about Sam/Dean that overwrites that. Maybe because they are so freaking fucked-up or something. Or maybe because their relationship (in any form) is the glue that holds the show together. (And there’s the fact that the show has a bit of tendency to turn them homoerotic - Playthings anyone?)

I don’t need their relationship to be sexualised though. I enjoy the Winchester brothers in any form as long as they are the emotional center.

alphabet26 asked a lot of questions. The first one is one of my sample questions - the one about misogyny in SPN.

The misogyny in SPN. Well, as I didn’t start to watch the show until relatively recently, I honestly was prepared for the worst (yes, I’ve read the wanks) and I clearly was prepared for something a lot worse.

Yes, there can be a misogynist undercurrent in the show. Dean in particular is sometimes written in such way that he appears to categorise women in those dreaded mother-virgin-whore categories. And it can be jarring. I don’t know, I see some of the perceived misogyny to be subpar writing (yes, that happens on SPN). The recurrent female characters do get the short end of the stick.

Maybe I should be worried because it doesn’t really take away from my enjoyment of the show. I dunno. The misogyny which bothers me, is the misogyny displayed in the fandom itself. Maybe because that’s more RL.

alphabet26 asked another SPN related question and I have an inkling sarahblack is interested in the answer as well. That is, what's my thoughts on Jo?

Jo Harvelle. Well, I think poor Jo didn’t get a good treatment from the show. Our first introduction to hear is heavily laid romantic tension between her and Dean, enough to get some shippers going. Then Dean’s hastily made to see her as a kid sister and then her story line doesn’t get a proper wrap-up. God, I sound like I’m dumping all over the show’s writers but I think they kind of failed with Jo and Ellen both - one of the show’s biggest failures really.

Then there come the Harry Potter opinions.

alphabet26 and chickadilly both wanted my thoughts on the epilogue.

I get why people don’t like the epilogue. ‘Cause it’s a bit of a cutesy ending after the emotional rollercoaster that was Deathly Hallows. I like it for what it is. The author wanted us to know that somewhere in the writing process, she sat down and decided on the futures of her main characters and then wrote a snapshot. I like that. I don’t care that much for the kids. Of the Weasleys and Potters, I’m personally most intrigued by James and Hugo. But most of all I’m intrigued by Teddy Lupin. Orphans just tend to be that interesting. But I’m not overly excited about them. So yeah, in short, I like the epilogue. Doesn’t mean I didn’t write around it back when I still tried to write HP fics.

alphabet26 then asked me about my favourite canon and fanon ships in Harry Potter.

Well, my favourite ship in HP canon is Ron/Hermione. Been shipping that since “whatever house I’m in, I hope she’s not in it.”

My favourite fanon ship is Harry/Ron. It’s the only ship I can claim to still read when it comes to Harry Potter fanfiction.

Finally prettyannamoon got curious about what kind of Twilight fanfiction I'd write (if I had no choice or something).

During the crazy weekend of Twilight reading (I had just read Breaking Dawn from chapters and stuff that had leaked and then the rest after the book was out and then burned through New Moon and Eclipse), one of the things I lamented (other than that lost weekend and the loss of my sanity) was the fact we had to read all about Boring Bella and Emo Edward and just got a taste of the characters who actually might be interesting (in the hands of someone else than SMeyer). Maybe about Carlisle before he became a vampire (the dude was a hunter of the supernatural!). Or Jasper in the Civil War. But the most epic thing would be to write the big showdown between the Volturi and the Romanian coven. But I’ll never ever write that because dude, that means research and there’s no chance in hell I’m not going to do research for a Twilight fic.
