Last night in the cleaning and clearing, I also ran into a pile of writing I had done for this writing workshop.
I had written a memoir piece about visiting my crazy foster mother in Colorado quite some years ago. I said that the retirement village was just outside of the infamous Littleton and a couple of the people had no idea what I was talking about. I honestly thought that anybody over 40 would know that this was a reference to the first of the never-ending school shootings. Columbine is in Littleton, Colorado.
Would you all get that reference? Would people get it if I said Columbine? Tell me!
That's the weird thing about critique. Sometimes it is helpful and sometimes it is just crazy.
My friend Sylvia dropped out of the writing workshop because of family obligations. I also suspect that she thinks it's a bit beneath her, as she is really a snob. My friend Nan in the group had her feelings hurt by some comment Sylvia made. I told Nan to just ignore Sylvia. I didn't like or agree with any of the criticism she piled on me.
