My MIL is taking lots of meds that rob her of energy. She doesn't want to give over the kitchen, so we all help out. She gets very frustrated and can be testy. Her response to M or her spouse if they can't find something is "How long have you lived in this house?" I tease her by saying "You can't say that to me!"
They did not want to go out, so she cooked, prepping things a few at a time, but then getting really tired at the last minute work. We had brought horsd'ouvres, and some drinkables, so we could take little breaks during the last bit. The meal reached the table before she quite collapsed, and the praise for her chicken cordon bleu, cheese muffins, salad and fruit salad cheered her right back up again. It was amazing to see the color come back into her face.
So then we didn't let her get up again, but made her give orders. He liked his presents - a watch, a bottle of good sipping stuff, and a Giants panda bear, and read his cards out loud. THen we ate this ice cream cake (small amounts for the two diabetics), and played dominoes. It was just nice. We teased each other and accused each other of all sorts of infamy, at the same time teaching him the rules. M stayed patient and coached his Dad and everyone had fun. We finally had to abandon the 2nd game because it was 10 at night and my alarm rings at 6. Everyone had fun. Nobody had to watch Fox News and bite their tongues. We just enjoyed each other.
