The Adjustment Bureau
Seen in theaters
Directed by George Nolfi (First time directing)
Best movie I've seen in quite a while. And it works on the moderate strength of a great many elements.
The story unfolds in a really nice way. Our storyline is engaging and unique, without being confusing or too artsy.
Matt Damon really shines in this one. His portrayal of a charming and earnest politician is a breath of fresh air from his recent hard-edged roles. Whenever Emily Blunt is onscreen, the two of them pull of a remarkable chemistry.
And the storyline itself it an interesting one to follow. I won't give anything away here, but it's a neat way to look at the world. I was surprised to find out this is based on a Philip K. Dick short story. P.K.D.'s stuff is usually fairly predictable, but this one kept me guessing.
All this combined with some strong supporting performances (including Terrance Stamp in one of his best roles), a great visual style (coupled with some sublime effects) and a great story about human nature and we've got an enjoyable little tale.
I have to say I wasn't expecting a whole lot from this one, simply because this is usually a slow time of year for movies. Also I hear the release date was pushed back a few times. Usually a bad sign. Not in this case.
Would I own it? No, but I would happily watch it again.
