Wowzers. This was a damn good movie. I worry that people not familiar with the source material might not be able to follow it very well.
Let me say that it's a remarkable story. And it's brought to the screen very well. Honestly it was considered unfilmable as it's written and Zack Snyder managed to trim the story just right to get it on the screen in a very strong way.
Is it perfect? Not at all. Far from it. There are lots of little bits that I don't like. For example, I think that many of the emotional peaks fall flat. The Comedian in the bar in Vietnam, for example. Or the rape scene. Those should be over the top, screaming and crying and foaming at the mouth moments. Instead they're just kinda....upset. "Ow...my face. You suck!"
Perhaps they're just rushed emotional moments. In a comic you can hit an emotional peak every chapter. In a movie there are limits to how many times the audience will follow you up and down.
But I think those flat acting moments are what keep the average movie going person to really embrace this film for the near-miracle it is.
Is it as good as the comic? No. Does it have it's weak points? Absolutely. But I still came away from it with a solid feeling of satisfaction. And having seen it more than once, I'm very secure in that opinion.
Would I own it? Absolutely. I'd own it on special 3 disc edition that comes with the bloody button and I'd sit and watch all the extras. (Unless they have one about the composer writing the score. That would bore the crap out of me)
