Sen smiled, fangs bared, smiled a smile recalling to mind the monsters lurking in the half-sleep and twilight, those moments caught and bound between reality and the abyss of unknown, that pitch-deep Hopelessness you see once in your nightmares and pray to God you’ll never see again.

Trailing a tongue over cracked lips, he savored the sweetly sour, crimson tang that colors the tongue and stains the hands for everlasting, the searing tattoos of sin never to fade and never to cease their burrows beneath the skin, darkness that seeps to taint the very core-to the heart, to the soul.

Madness incarnate, bound and entwined, this disease paints its dingy scarlet in broad, dripping swathes that singe in the moonlight and cower in the sunshine yet mask all else in the eyes of those cursed to bear witness.

Struggling shakily to feet hinged by abused muscles that knotted and creaked in duress, threatening to give even beneath the weight of this sparrow’s frame, Sen threw tanned, sinewy arms wide to greet the ascension of a blood-red sun beyond a crimson horizon. This devil’s sun soaked the plain in a ghastly shroud of light-trick carnage-no nearer the truth than sleight of hand-but haunting in its horrific realism.

Sen relished the sight, greedily drinking his fill of illusory corruption as if he had stumbled upon the Elixir of Life itself. With newfound dark velvet coursing through his veins, his smile faded, twin horns disappeared beneath a striking mop of shock-white and jet-black dreads, and he turned his back to the rising menace that bewitched the plain. And thus, a journey began.
