So I just finished Soul Eater. I've been completing my series one by one and I need to write reviews for them. Hopefully better ones than the one I gave for Natsume Yuujinchou. I want to give my opinion without it giving spoilers

I agree that they should have had more plot in the beginning and less fluff, however, it did develop the characters more, in particular, Ciel. Seeing him in a situation other than one full of hatred and angst gave his character a little more dimension. It also showed exactly how far Sebastian was willing to go for this deal he made.
The random staff backgrounds might not have been so random, just badly placed. I need to read the manga, but I think that if they were to have explained the pasts of the staff toward the beginning, it wouldn't have come off as a random plot device.
I enjoyed the second half of the show very much for the dramatics, and the first half of the show as comedy. I guess because I didn't watch it all at once, I was able to separate the two parts, as if they were two different series all together, just with the same characters.
It is a fanservice-y show, but hey, I'm a fangirl. I enjoyed Ciel's angst and Sebastian's unnerving charm. And I really enjoyed their slashability XD. The minor characters like the staff, in particular Tanaka, bothered me. Angela was a fairly descent villain, and the tragedy of the queen was sort of touching. This show makes me want to read the manga to get a more complete story, especially about what in particular happened to Ciel.
The ending, I thought, was awesome. I was expecting a cop out. Like Sebastian decides that he likes being a butler too much and that he'll live with Ciel until Ciel is old and dying, and then take his soul. But no, he did exactly what he said he was going to do. His job was done and he collected his price without hesitation, though he was a little nicer to Ciel than one would expect a demon to be to his prey. So yes, I was pleasantly surprised.
Overall, it was a little rushed, it probably could have been better if they were given more episodes to work with or cut back on the fluff and filler at the beginning. I enjoyed the fluff, so making the series longer would have been my choice.
