The One That Got Away.

Jung Yunho was a simple man who lived a simple life. Well, not that being a public prosecutor was simple, but he was doing what he wanted to do in the place where he has grown to love, Seoul.

Yunho was born and raised in Gwangju by a happy but strict family, with his mother, father, and younger sister. He had good grades and was always in the top of his class. His dream jobs were consisted of the typical careers young boys would most likely prefer. He wanted to be a police officer, a fireman and even a lifeguard at some point. All of these titles had one thing in common, being in the field required one to save lives.

When Yunho reached high school, he studied in Seoul. He moved in with their relatives, the Shims. He grew close with his cousin, Changmin who was 2 years younger than him.

Due to the naivety that came with young age, Changmin was dragged into an ill-mannered group of friends from school. One day, they were hanging out in a convenience store when they cut class, and one of them decided that they should get something without paying for it. They got caught probably because of the lack of experience and the obvious nervousness in their faces. They all made a run for it, but Changmin got caught. It was funny how he was the only who was vying against it and now he’s facing the consequences. He paid for the item and was forced to serve one week of community service which was tripled because he didn’t want to tell on his friends who were the real culprits.

Yunho had blamed himself for what has become of Changmin because he was the one who had pledged to look out for the younger one like a big brother. He knew Changmin wasn’t the type to get involved in stupid things, he was far better than that.

As shallow as the reason might have been, he knew Changmin didn’t deserve to be punished and be placed in a kangaroo court when he was just dragged into it by his peers, he wasn’t even the one who shoplifted the item in the first place, this incident had made him want to become someone who could bring justice to the innocent from the false accusations that are untrue and save them from punishments that they don’t deserve.

When he grew up a little older and a little wiser and was in that stage wherein he had to decide what course to get for college, he was already decided that he wanted to become a lawyer.

It was 2 in the afternoon when a tall, handsome man was driving an Audi R8 headed to the airport. He was a picking up a friend who had been gone for 5 long years.

He pulled over to the arrivals gate when he saw the man he knew so well. He stepped out of the car to help the other with his luggage. He noticed the prominent pout plastered on the other’s face which caused his lips to form a snarky smirk.

“I thought Yunho was gonna pick me up?” The shorter man asked, wondering why Yunho, who promised to pick him up wasn’t there like he promised.

“Yunho-hyung got stuck in the office. You know, busy saving innocent people from undeserved punishment and all that justice stuff.” Changmin said with a hearty chuckle, remembering the day when Yunho scolded him for the shop-lifting incident. “Ahh… Jae-hyung… so did the one that got away decide to become the one who came back?” the younger man teased.

“Whatever dongsaeng!” Jaejoong said, slightly annoyed, another pout forming on his beautiful features. “If you keep that up, I won’t cook for you ever again.”

“Aish! Hyung! That’s unfair, you know my weakness.” Changmin whined like the young dongsaeng he was. “Ah.. but I know you’re weakness too.”

Jaejoong ignored the last statement by the younger man, and Changmin got the signal. They both went inside the car to head to the house of its owner.

Changmin left Jaejoong alone in Yunho’s house to head to his university, but of course, not before getting to taste Jaejoong’s famous Kimchi Jiggae. Although Jaejoong’s name was rising in the culinary industry due to his very refined skills, Changmin opted for the familiar taste of Jaejoong’s home cooked meals because it has been a long time since he has tasted it.

Jaejoong was alone in Yunho’s flat, but he knew his way around it. Very few things have changed in the five years he hasn’t been there. The furniture was still the same. There were slight changes in the arrangement, but it was all still very familiar to him. He especially loved the fact that Yunho kept his red velvet-y sofa. Jaejoong slowly made his way to it and laid down on it as he remembered all the silly things that he and Yunho did way back.

It was a little past 7 in the evening when Yunho arrived home. He knew that Jaejoong would be there. So he called out his name when he went in. “Jae? Are you here?”

“Yunho-ah! Welcome home! I’m in the kitchen.” Jaejoong yelled out from his place.

Yunho made his way to the kitchen and found a very busy Jaejoong, preparing dinner, wearing his old black apron that Yunho kept in the same shelf all these years. Yunho smiled at the sight as he felt a heavy sense of nostalgia. “I should be the one saying welcome back to you, Jae.”

Jaejoong paused in his cooking to look at Yunho and smile up to him. He didn’t feel awkward at all even if they haven’t met for so long, Jaejoong was still comfortable around Yunho albeit not as much as before. Jaejoong brought Yunho to a tight hug, surprising the other, Yunho’s body tensed, but he immediately regained composure and hugged him back just as tight, or maybe even tighter.

“I missed you.”

“We all missed you, too.” Yunho replied, pulling away so the chef could get back to his cooking. “So… How was Paris?”

“It’s very lovely there. I wish you could have seen the places I’ve been to. There are tons of lovely and romantic sights.” Jaejoong answered happily, obviously excited to tell Yunho all about Paris.

“I guess you really liked it there, huh?” Yunho asked carefully.

“Yeah.” Jaejoong said, as perky as before.

“so.. why did you decide to come back?” The atmosphere in the room suddenly became a little tense. Yunho didn’t mean anything bad by the question, he was just simply curious.

Jaejoong, after a long pause, gave out a small laugh and answered. “Well, although I did enjoy my stay in Paris, I’d still much rather be in Seoul. I love Seoul, and the people I love…” Jaejoong paused again, gazing intensely at the taller man. “are here.”

“I see.” Yunho said with a slight smile on his small, handsome face. “Oh. I bought us a few drinks. Yoochun suggested them, but if you’re still tired from your flight and have a jetlag, then it’s totally fine if we don’-.”

“No, it’s okay. I can handle it.” Jaejoong cut in. “Let’s get to it after dinner.”

“Okay. Great.”

After the very phenomenal meal that Jaejoong had prepared for them, Yunho felt stuffed and was glad he had brought beer with him. They bonded over a few cans and began filling each other up with what’s happened to each other’s lives in the years they were apart. After the 5th can, Yunho had totally loosened up and asked Jaejoong about a very delicate topic, one that they both had tried to avoid for a very long time. “Hey, Jae. Why did you break up with me back then?”

Jaejoong was busy trying to get every last drop of beer in the can he was currently holding. “Hmm… I guess it seemed like a good idea at the time.”

“What?” Yunho looked pretty pissed off with Jaejoong’s nonchalant answer to the question he had been wanting to know the answer to all these years. He suddenly felt sobered up after that and all that was left was the feeling of anger and pent up frustration from all these years. “You broke up with me back then just because you fucking thought it was a good idea?”

Yunho’s raised voice startled Jaejoong. Jaejoong willed himself to not be fazed by the alcohol and apologize to the very devastated man in front of him. “Yunho, I-“

“Don’t fucking apologize to me. I can’t risk giving into you and forgiving you immediately because God knows, how much I’m still inclined to give you everything you want even after all these years.

“Y-Yunho-ah. I-I’ll just leave. I’m sorry for intruding on you like this. I-I should have just booked a hotel in the first place.” Jaejoong said hurrily, as he made a move to get up.

“No.” Yunho protested against it. “You stay here. I’m not one to break promises. I said you could stay here, so stay. I’ll head out.”

And just like that, their supposedly ‘bonding’ and ‘catching up’ time turned into a fight.

Yunho came home at around 3:00 in the morning. He was expecting Jaejoong to be sleeping soundly in the guest room. He went up the stairs and made his way to look for his guest, but the sounds he heard from his own bedroom got his attention first. He noticed that the door to his room was slightly ajar.

He peeked inside to see who was inside. He could hear 2 voices, one surely belonged to Jaejoong but the other, he wasn’t so sure.

He found Jaejoong seated on his king-sized bed, wearing something very familiar. Yunho got distracted by the expanse of alabaster skin glowing angelically under the moonlight. Yunho’s heart turned into a puddle of goo in an instant. He couldn’t deny how much he missed this sight. Jaejoong was wearing one of Yunho’s white dress shirts. ‘Old habbits die hard’, Yunho thought to himself. He snapped out of his trance as he heard his name from the angelic man on his bed. He realized that Jaejoong was talking on the phone with someone. He couldn’t help but eavesdrop. It was his room anyway, he had the right to stand by his own door.

“You’re wearing his clothes, aren’t you?” the man on the other line, who Yunho recognized as Yoochun, said knowingly.

“Yes, Chun, I am. Did you really have to ask?” Jaejoong answered back, not even slightly embarrassed at getting caught. “I can’t help it okay? I miss him.”

“Yeah, well, it’s obvious that he missed you, too, and that he still cares about you. I mean, he wouldn’t have walked out if he was over you, y’know?” Jaejoong could practically see the image of Yoochun wiggling his eyebrows in a greasy manner and couldn’t help but laugh at his friend. “It’s true, Jae. We all know that the two of you are still very much inlo- I mean, into each other.”

“I don’t know, Chun. He didn’t even say he missed me, he said, and I quote ‘We all missed you’.” Jaejoong complained as he hugged Yunho’s pillow to his chest. A smile tugging his lips at the familiar scent.

“Well, I can’t blame him. You’re non-stop nagging and bitching isn’t really something someone would miss.” Yoochun teased, not really serious about what he said.

“Yah! I DO NOT NAG, but if I ever did, it was all out of love.”

“Okay, okay, but you’re still a bitch.”

“Fuck you, chun.” Jaejoong said, annoyed at his best friend for still joking around when he had a huge crisis at hand.

“Yeah, I’m sorry, Changmin won’t approve of this.”

“Won’t approve of what?” Changmin said in the background.

“Nothing, baby. Jae’s just being a bitch.” Yoochun explained to his boyfriend before getting back to the real topic. “So what are you planning to do?”

“I don’t know, Chun. I guess I’ll just have to wear all his clothes and leave my scent on each and every one of them, so that everything he wears will remind him of me.” Jaejoong got up and went through Yunho’s closet, finding some old familiar shirts that Yunho probably rarely wears now. “If that doesn’t make him miss, then I don’t know what to do anymore.”

“You can always just wait ‘til he arrives and seduce him with your sexiness. Y’know, angry make up sex?” This time Jaejoong is sure that Yoochun was actually wiggling his eyebrows greasily.

“Chun, I’m serious. You know he’s not gonna forgive me that easily after what I did.” Jaejoong sighed, not liking his own words.

“Well, why don’t you just tell him why you left? Explain to him everything, so you can finally get your happily ever after.”

“Chun, it’s not that ea-.” Jaejoong got cut off mid-sentence by a voice that he wasn’t sure if he was happy to hear or not.

“Yeah, why don’t you just tell me right now.” Yunho said, finally showing himself to the unsuspecting man in front of him.

“Yun.” Was all the shorter man could voice out, too shocked and too embarrassed at the thought of Yunho hearing his conversation with Yoochun.

“Jae.” Yunho replied back. He took the few steps to his bed and sat in front of his ex-lover.

“I-“ Jaejoong tried to say something, anything, but the words wouldn’t come out.

“You what? Did you think you could just come waltzing back into my life and I’d let you?”
