The school was buzzing with the latest gossip.

“Oh my god! I can’t believe they broke up on the SAME DAY!”

Naturally, the “break ups” were the talk of the school causing much speculation as to why such events occurred.

“Do you think Aimi and Yama-chan dumped them so they could get together?” One girl asked.

“I heard it was the girls who did the dumping.” Another girl said.

“No, as if. Have you seen those girls? They’re crazy, the boys probably dumped them!”

The class erupted into chatter about the love square before going silent at the sound of the door opening. It was Yamada. All eyes were on him as he walked to his seat and slammed his book on the table. Whispers could be heard all around the room.

“Seriously, just grow up!” He snapped at the gossips in the back of the class.

“Yep, he definitely got dumped.” One of the girls whispered.

The classroom atmosphere was quite the same for Hikaru and Rika. Rika just soaked up the attention, enjoying the fact that she was finally being noticed. Like they say, you’re nobody until you’re talked about. Hikaru on the other hand didn’t notice anything. He was too engrossed in his thoughts and pain. And for some reason, worry. Aimi hadn’t shown up at school that day, and Hikaru was worried that he may have seriously hurt her. He shook his head to snap out of it.

How could I have hurt her, she never cared for me! You can’t hurt someone unless they care for you…
Oh, if only he knew…

Aimi wallowed in her room that day. She played the same sad song over and over.

I’m not the type to get my heart broken

I’m not the type to get upset and cry

Cause I never leave my heart open

Never hurts me to say goodbye

A tear rolled down her cheek. The worst part was that all she could think about was his smiling face. How he shined inside and out; full of energy. How his laughter was contagious. Aimi was stricken with pain when she knew his smile, his glow, his energy and laughter would now be things of the past. And it’s all my fault. She thought, despising herself in that moment. This was the first time she had ever cared for anyone more than herself, and to see him happy again was all she wished for; even if she wasn’t part of that happiness. All I will do is hurt him…

My mind is gone, I’m spinning around

And deep inside, my tears I’ll drown

I’m losing grip, what’s happening?

I stray from love, this is how I feel…

Aimi cringed in pain at the truth of the lyrics as a fresh set of tears rolled down her pretty face.

Rika was wondering down the hallways to her next lesson, smirking at all the stares she received from her peers. She froze when she saw a familiar face.  She aimed at her target, and prepared to fire. “This is it…” She whispered to herself. “Hika-chan!” She beamed.

Hikaru cringed in pain. “That’s what she called me…” He spoke miserably with darkness in his tone.

Rika feigned sympathy. “Oh, Hikaru, I’m sorry…” She tilted his chin up. His eyes were full of emptiness and his face was pulled into a hard, expressionless mask. “If it makes you feel better, Yama-chan and I -“

He cut her off. “I know.” He replied emotionlessly.

Rika inched closer, so their faces were practically an inch apart. “You know Hikaru, you can do better than her.” She whispered somewhat seductively.

Hikaru looked down at her, his gaze still empty. Before he knew what he was doing, his lips were pressed against hers hungrily. Hikaru was willing to do anything to take away the pain. Anything to keep his mind off her. But this failed when Rika unexpectedly kissed him back, causing the memories of his and Aimi’s kiss on the beach to fill his mind. The memories played over and over in his mind until he truly believed that it was Aimi he was sharing the moment with. The way he felt when he was with her, it couldn’t be described. It was like there was a fire in him burning so brightly and warmly. Her smile, his own sun and her eyes his stars. His heart melted at the image in his mind.

Rika’s heart began to beat faster when she felt Hikaru kissing her so passionately. Maybe he realised that deep down he does love me… She decided if there was any time to confess it was now. “You know, I’ve always liked you Hikaru…”

Hikaru’s eyes opened, expecting to see Aimi’s face after hearing those words. Instead he was faced with Rika. If Hikaru’s face weren’t in its mask right now, it would have dropped. It hit him then. He would never share such a moment with Aimi again, she didn’t care for him. The thought tore him apart and he was willing to do anything to make the pain go away. He was ready to settle for anything, or anyone. Rika liked him, Aimi never could. Maybe I can fall for her, and get over Aimi… He was willing to do anything, anything to escape from the memory of her.

Not far away, Yamada had witnessed the whole scene. The rage that filled him was nothing compared to the sorrow that was in his heart. Rika had changed completely and still somehow managed to get what she wanted. She wouldn’t change back.  Not when it was all in the palm of her hand right now. And what the hell is up with Hikaru? He thought. He didn’t even look like that BEFORE he met Aimi. He stared at his two completely different best friends, just wishing for a way to get their old selves back. Think, Ryosuke, think…

[ the next day ]

Aimi decided to attend school. It wasn’t like she could hide from it, wallowing in her pain forever. She ignored the stares everyone gave her. She really couldn’t care anymore, in fact, why should she care? The only time she did care for anyone other than herself was the time she had lost all she cared about. People always say love is kind. She thought. But then it comes up behind you and stabs you in the back. And twists the knife around a few times. She stopped dead in her tracks at the sight before her. No… she thought. I should have stayed home, I’m such an idiot! It was Hikaru, and in his arms was…Rika. Aimi’s heart crushed into little pieces as the pain overwhelmed her. Of everyone you could have chosen it had to be HER! Aimi thought out of bitter jealousy as tears welled up in her eyes. He had changed immensely. Where was his glow? His energy? His smile? His laughter? Who was he? It’s all my fault, he would still be himself if I hadn’t been so stupid as to use him… She turned and ran. She ran from her mistakes, her regrets and her heartbreak.

Hikaru was holding Rika in his arms, waiting and waiting for his heart to beat faster. But it never happened. No matter what he did, all he could think about was Aimi. He looked up and…

It can’t be… he thought. I could have sworn I just saw her walk around that corner… He looked down at Rika. “I have to go.” He whispered, and chased after the girl he loved.

Yamada was walking down the stairs to his next lesson. He had been late that day from sleeping in. He didn’t get much sleep as he was up all night, deep in thought. This caused him to miss every train that would have gotten him to school on time. He sighed. Why am I even here? He thought. The day isn’t going to be any different to the one before. A sound interrupted Yamada’s thoughts. The sound of…someone’s sobs? The situation felt like déjà vu to Yamada, but he continued down the steps only to find Aimi in complete misery on the stairs.

“Aimi?”

She turned to reveal cheeks stained with black tears from her now ruined eye make-up. She turned around again to hide her face, clearly ashamed of being seen so vulnerable and exposed.

“Go away.” Her voice shook. “Can’t you see I just want to be alone?”

Yamada’s heart broke for the girl before him. She was the last one he expected to see like this, in a complete mess as a result of heartbreak. She had obviously fallen hard for Hikaru in the end. “It hurts me too you know.”

She looked back at him.

“To see them together.”

Aimi didn’t know why, but she decided to open up to Yamada. Maybe it would be best, we can relate to each other… “It’s not just that.” Aimi spoke softly. “He just isn’t the same.”

Yamada nodded. “I realised that the moment he asked me to get something out of his locker and I wasn’t squirted with some slimy substance from one of his usual pranks.”

Aimi smiled remembering her beloved prankster. How he made her laugh… but the picture of how he was with Rika slipped into her mind causing her smile to fade. “Who is he now…” The hurt was evident in her voice.

Yamada sighed. “A more depressed version of who he was before you came into his life.”

Aimi flinched at the word ‘depressed’. Yamada saw how she hated the fact that she caused him pain. He gave you a heart like you opened his…

Yamada continued. “And believe me, I ask the same question about her.” He walked down the steps and sat next to her.

Aimi across at him. Yamada was obviously in such distress over Rika. Rika was lucky to have a guy care about her as much as Yamada did, yet she took it completely for granted. Like I used to do… Aimi thought. “You really love her ne~”

Yamada nodded with sadness in his eyes. “The way you love him.”

Tears burst out of Aimi’s eyes. “I love him so much…”

Tears formed in Yamada’s eyes. He knew Aimi’s pain. He had been experiencing it for as long as he had seen Rika look at Hikaru the way she did without ever acknowledging his feelings.

Aimi sniffed. “I love him so much, but he will never believe it if I tell him that.”

Yamada wrapped his arms around her in comfort while she expressed the hidden depth of her feelings for Hikaru.

“He just changed my world completely, he was like my light; he was just everything to me.”

Yamada held her tightly and lifted his head before quickly letting go of Aimi. OH SHIT!

Hikaru was trying to find Aimi. He was sure he saw her, and that she walked this way. Or was it that way? Maybe she went up the stairs… He headed towards the stairs and stopped while pain struck every inch of his body. Resent and envy consumed him and his empty eyes were filled with fire, burning holes through the pair in front of him. The tears welled up in his own eyes as he looked up to the heavens in disbelief. The darkness that clouded him suddenly filled him completely. Yamada had seen him and had let go of Aimi in that instant. Hikaru glared at him with eyes green with envy and full of spite.

“I see you got what you wanted.” He whispered to Aimi. His heart cracked more and more after he had said the words. He continued to walk towards them up the stairs and collided shoulders with Yamada’s on the way up.

Aimi burst into tears at the thought of the boy she loved uttering such words of dislike towards her.

Yamada’s heart broke at the sight. Can’t you see he still loves you!?! And then it clicked in his mind. He knew how to get his best friends back to their old selves.
