“Now class, for our next assignment we will be writing our own piece of poetry in English.”

Everyone groaned. They knew the task would be difficult.

Aimi, though, had to go to huge lengths to hide her excitement. Of everything in language classes, she loved poetry the most, simply because song lyrics were poetry. Music was Aimi’s greatest passion. Music was how she would express herself and lately she had been listening to lots of angry songs about jealousy. She was a great singer, pianist, guitarist - you name it, she could play it. She loved to write lyrics and poetry and what excited her about this assignment was that she could write it all in ENGLISH! She was great at English; she could almost speak it fluently. GAH! I can’t wait!

Then the English teacher was babbling about stupid techniques used in poetry.

Aimi tried to listen, but all she heard was “blah, blah, blah.” To be honest, her mind was elsewhere. She was thinking about everything Hiromi had said to her the other night. Every word echoed in her mind.

“You know, if you could just forget your pride and open up your heart people might actually like you.”

Aimi felt miserable. I hate to admit it but she’s right, no one likes me. Well, no one except Hikaru, but I don’t even want him! Everyone likes Hiromi though, and everyone likes Rika… Aimi just felt envious of her rivals. Aimi laid on her arms rested on top of her desk, deep in thought and was oblivious to the bell that sounded at the end of the lesson. Her mind had drifted off, thinking about her complications and issues, how she could manipulate her way out of them. When it all seemed too difficult, Aimi was bought back down to Earth by someone tapping on her shoulder.

“Wake up sleepy head.”

I fell asleep? Aimi opened her eyes, looked up and without thinking said “Oh, god, it’s you!”

Hikaru laughed, obviously under the impression that she was joking. “I was waiting outside, and when you didn’t come out I decided to come in and see what was taking you so long. I thought we could walk to phys. Ed. Together…”

Aimi shot up. “Phys. Ed?”

“yeah…did you forget?”

“Yeah…I guess I did.” Crap, I totally forgot Rika and Ryo-kun are in our class! Aimi really didn’t want a bar of them today. She wasn’t in the mood. There was just something eating at her hide…

Hikaru interrupted her thoughts. “So come on what are you waiting for, we’re already late!” And before Aimi could protest, he grabbed her hand and began running towards the gym.

[in the gym…]

Hikaru and Aimi walked inside the gym, expecting everyone to be midway through a soccer game. Instead, everyone was in partners…

DANCING!?! Aimi and Hikaru thought in sync.

“Oh, good, there are two of you, quick, to that spot over there.” The guy that was obviously the dance instructor pointed. He quickly taught them the steps. They were doing some kind of waltz.

Hikaru and Aimi began to dance, but Hikaru was horrible at it and Aimi couldn’t be bothered. They gave up doing the steps and just slowdanced like everyone else in the class who had also given up. Everyone except a cute little boy named Yuuri Chinen. He was going all out, doing spectacular moves and perfectly executing his steps.

“Show off…” Hikaru muttered. “Since you can do everything, could you dance better than him?” He asked Aimi.

Aimi giggled. “Probably.”

“We should stage a dance off, how should we punish him if, no, WHEN he loses.”

“He can’t sit in Takaki or Daiki’s laps for a whole year?”

Hikaru just laughed.

Yamada couldn’t believe it. He was a true romantic at heart and had always dreamed of this - dancing with Rika. It was just too perfect, just the only problem was, she just kept looking at them.

Aimi watched over as Yamada looked down at Rika. His eyes were shining and he was smiling from ear to ear. But just the way he looked at her…

I want that. She yawned. All this scheming and pondering over Rika and Hiromi and Yamada was just draining Aimi. She was actually losing sleep over it

He saw the weary look on Aimi’s face. “Tired?”

She nodded in agreement.

“Here.” Hikaru half lifted her so she was standing on his feet and didn’t have to move or anything.

She felt the urge to not waste such an opportunity and stamp on his feet but couldn’t be bothered so she just gave in. She looked back at Ryo-kun. He still had that look on his face when he looked at Rika. Aimi sighed and looked up at her partner. Aimi was taken aback. He was looking at her with the same look in his eyes. No one has ever looked at me like that before. Guilt consumed her, and before her pride could take over, she whispered so softly that no one else could hear. “I’m sorry, Hikaru.” She closed her eyes, just wishing to be away from the world for a while, and before she knew it, she had fallen asleep.

Hikaru was thankful that Aimi was light, otherwise he would have totally dropped her on the floor…giving her yet another reason to hate him and dump him. He looked down at her face. She just looks so peaceful… He smiled. He kept dancing, but all the time he couldn’t help but feel the odd sensation of someone’s eyes burning holes in his back.

So why did I get myself into this, why, why, why? Yamada questioned his motive when he agreed to pretend to be a couple with Rika.  All I’ve done is make myself depressed! And all she cares about is getting revenge on Aimi! Ugh, she can’t even stop glaring at them, ever!

Rika’s glare intensified with every moment. Damn, she’s good, getting all cosy with Hikaru and not even making it obvious that she’s just trying to make me jealous… In the past week, Rika had been deeply analysing every move Aimi had made.

Even the ones that Aimi didn’t intend to make Rika jealous or affect her in any way.

“Just look at her, pretending to be asleep while he holds her, it just makes me sick!”

“Rika, just stop worrying about them for one moment!”

“No! I have to be on my guard, or else she will get me…do you want me to faint again Yama-chan?” She pouted, just like Aimi does.

Yamada took offense at this. “No, no…of course not, but I just think you’re over paranoid about this whole thing, you just need to calm down and let loose.”

Rika glared at Yamada. “Not until I’m her.” She said bitterly, while pointing at the girl who she wanted to crush and who’s throne she had set out to steal.

Yamada was horrified. Not until you’re her, hey? Well you aren’t far off!

The dance instructor walked around, observing each couple’s progress. He stopped at Yamada and Rika. “Hmm, no, I don’t like this pairing…you!” He pointed at Rika. “Come with me.”
Rika followed while Yamada just watched. No, don’t take her away!

The dance instructor led her to Hikaru and Aimi, who was awake now.

Oh my god, no way!!! Rika almost squealed out of excitement.

Aimi and Hikaru looked up at the dance instructor while he pulled them away from each other and replaced Aimi with Rika. “Ah, much, much, MUCH better!” He admired his pairing. “Now, you, over to the boy without a partner over there.” He pointed over at Yamada.

Aimi was quite afraid. R-r-r-Ryo-kun? She was quite aware that he despised her.

The dance instructor could see her hesitance. “Oh, come on, it’s not like he’s going to attack you.”

Yeah, for all you know. Aimi thought as she reluctantly walked over to Yamada.

Move over, princess, it’s my turn. Rika couldn’t believe she FINALLY got to be alone with Hikaru since Aimi stole his heart…and dancing with him too! AHHH I can’t believe it! She remembered what he was doing with Aimi, it was really cute. I want to do it too! Rika pouted. She went to stand on his feet like Aimi but was stopped…

“What are you doing?”

“Oh, silly me, I keep stepping on your feet…”

“Right…”

Rika felt the cold, hard stab of rejection. She stamped on his foot.

“ITAI!”

“Sorry, I can’t get these steps right.” She smiled angelically.

Jeez, she looks like she’s seen a ghost. Yamada thought as he saw Aimi’s pale, frightened face as she walked his way. I’m not that scary, am I?

She slowly, cautiously, put her arms in place, and he did the same. Soon enough they were dancing and began to relax.

Wow…I finally get to be alone with Ryo-kun… Aimi thought half-heartedly.

Yamada couldn’t stop staring at Rika. Well, now I can see why she always gets so jealous of Aimi, it’s kind of hard to act sane when the person you love is hanging off another person’s arm… he thought jealously. Maybe she will be more like herself after dancing with him, though. He sighed as he watched on, not failing to notice why the dance instructor had paired them up. They look really good together.

Hikaru watched over nervously. It wasn’t that Yamada had a reputation for stealing guy’s girlfriends…it was just that he was one of those guys all the girls liked. He was like prince charming. He was the guy the other guys got nervous to see their girlfriends around, with that killer smile and his striking good looks. And now Yamada was possibly doing the most romantic thing a school lesson can offer and with his girlfriend. Hikaru bit his lip as he watched on.

Rika noticed his staring and decided to gain his attention. “So, Hikaru…”

Hikaru looked down for a second before looking back at Aimi. “Yeah?”

“I was just thinking, we used to hang around all the time, but we never do anymore.”

Hikaru didn’t look down this time. “Yeah I know.”

“Well what’s up with that?”

“Well I’d ask you on a double date, but it’s a shame that you and Aimi don’t like each other…”

“What?” Rika jumped. A double date? That would be the perfect opportunity to shoot that bitch down. “No we don’t.” She lied. “Why? Did she say something to you?”

“No, you can just tell, it’s pretty obvious.”

Rika just decided to shut her mouth. Well this is going to be a lot harder than I thought.

Aimi and Yamada continued to silently dance. They didn’t say a word to each other. He kept on looking over at Rika and Hikaru.

Aimi chuckled. I can’t believe he’s getting jealous over Hikaru, that’s just too cute!

“What are you laughing for?” Yamada looked at her.

“Oh…nothing…”

Yamada eyed her suspiciously. Now he knew what Rika meant by “always being on your toes”.

Aimi suppressed her laughter this time. Calm down, Ryo-kun, I’m not scheming for once.

He looked back at Rika and Hikaru.

Aimi decided to look over and see how they were going. She caught Hikaru’s gaze and she looked away immediately.

Yamada decided to stop staring at Rika and Hikaru or else Rika would get suspicious. He looked down at Aimi and saw her blushing. He began to freak out. Oh, crap, crap, crap. Hikaru can’t see her like this over a slow dance with me! He looked over at Hikaru and sighed with relief. Hikaru seemed to be talking to Rika, he wasn’t looking over at them. Wait a minute, talking to Rika! Yamada looked over again. She looked so…happy. Oh, great, now I’m getting jealous over Hikaru!

Aimi looked up at Yamada and saw the tortured expression on his face. “Wanna sneak over and swap partners?” She suggested.

Yamada was taken aback. She’s being nice? This can’t be right… “Really?”

Aimi nodded.

Slowly, they danced over to Rika and Hikaru.

Hikaru was dancing and talking with Rika at one moment while staring at Aimi, and the next, Rika was replaced with Aimi in his arms. His heart stopped and his eyes lit up.

“Miss me?” she smiled cheekily.

Rika was enjoying her time with Hikaru so much. She closed her eyes. This is great! She opened them again, only to be faced with Yamada. “Yama-chan?”

He just grinned.

Rika was furious. That was just my one chance with Hikaru and that idiot stole it! “What are you doing?!?” She looked like she was about to breathe fire. “You ruined everything!”

Yamada’s grin faded and his heart sank.
