Aimi opened her eyes to see Hikaru in an utter state of shock. His eyes were opened wide, and he seemed to forget to blink. Rested where she was, Aimi could feel his heart going at a thousand beats a second. She looked up to see everyone also shocked. She could hear the girls whispering.

“Oh my god, she did not just…”

“Oh, yes she did.”

“What a slut!”

“I know it’s only her first day and she’s already trying to get some…”

Half of the guys looked at Hikaru as if he deserved a hi-5, the other half were just envious. Aimi’s eyes scanned the room until they fell on the two people whose reactions mattered. Yamada’s eyes were as wide as Hikaru’s.

Jealous?

And Rika…wait…where was Rika? A loud thud filled the room, the sound of the gym door abruptly shut. Rika had obviously decided to run off.

That was just too easy, and I haven’t even started yet. Aimi smirked as she got off of Hikaru. “Gomen, Hikaru-kun, I should really watch where I’m running next time.” She said with an evil, flirtatiousness. Then, not even caring what the sensei would say, she strutted out the gym door. Moments later, the bell rang.

The class began chattering wildly about Aimi and Hikaru’s “kiss”.

“Nice, mate, how did you manage that one!”

“Does that mean you guys are an item?”

Everyone was pestering Hikaru for information, the latest gossip on him and Aimi. Hikaru couldn’t hear a word they were saying, he was still in la-la-land. Yamada decided to save his best friend from the complete vultures his classmates had turned into and dragged him out the room.

Rika! Where’s Rika! He had seen her run off earlier. Oh crap, I need to find her, she’s probably a complete mess right now…

And boy was he right.

10 minutes through their next class, Yamada was still searching for Rika. He was desperately searching and when running down the stairs to the 3rd floor, he could hear her sobs.

“Rika…” He barely managed to say her name. He never wanted to see her cry, EVER. The sight cut him like a knife.

“Go away” She retorted through her muffled sobs.

“Rika, please…it kills me to see you like this, don’t push me away.”

Silence. Except the sound of her crying.

Yamada took a deep breath. “Rika, I know how you feel about him.” Those words possibly caused him more pain to speak than they caused her upon hearing them.

Rika looked up at him, hiding the rest of her face with her fringe. Her eyes were red and puffy from crying, and her cheeks were drenched from her tears. “You do…”

Yamada had to keep up his poker face. He felt like his heart had just been torn apart. It was one thing to suspect her feelings for Hikaru, it was another to have them confirmed. “I guess I’ve always known.”

“The s-s-same w-way I know h-how he f-feels about…” she was choking on her tears. “Her.” She couldn’t say her name. She just couldn’t.

“Yes, I know it hurts, and I’m sorry.” He sat down next to her and held her in his arms, like he had always imagined. Except in his imagination, they were like this because they were a couple, not because she had just had her heart broken by some manipulative, bitchy, seemingly perfect new girl who had just kissed the guy she loved.

They sat like that for a while, and his shirt was getting soaked in her tears. He tightened his arms around her. Please don’t cry. Yamada silently begged as he fought off his own tears. Please, please.

Rika eventually collected herself, stopped crying and began to speak. “You know, the funny thing is, I thought it was safe you know.”

“What? What was safe?”

“For him to like her.”

“How is Hikaru liking someone safe?”

“Well, because I always thought nothing would happen because I always thought she liked you.”

“So did I, I guess I was wrong.”

Rika laughed for the first time since the kiss, although she was dying inside. “Yama-chan, do you have a built in radar that tells you who everyone likes.”

“I don’t know, probably. Maybe that’s how I know Yuki-san is crushing on Yabu-kun.”

Rika laughed again. “And does the radar tell who Yama-chan is crushing on?”

Yamada stuttered. “Well…uh…no…”

“Oh come on Yama-chan, you never tell me these things.”

Yamada sighed jokingly. “Well, it has to be Yuki-san, maybe my jealousy is how I know she likes Yabu-kun, the way she stares at him drives me insane.”

Rika giggled. “No really Yama-chan, tell me!” She pouted, trying the puppy eyes on him.

He looked deeply into her eyes and seriously considered saying those 3 words, those eight letters. But his heart ached when he guessed the outcome. Rika could never love him, not when she loved Hikaru as much as she did. Hikaru was just everything he wasn’t. He was a joker, he could be a bit of a dork, but it always made Rika laugh and he just had that THING that drew Rika to a person. “Uhm, this girl, you wouldn’t know her.”

Did that seriously just happen? She didn’t just kiss me did she? Maybe it was a mistake; I mean it’s obvious she has a thing for Yamada. But maybe she might like me; she didn’t have to kiss me if she didn’t. Hikaru was still stunned by the kiss. It was like static, it was like…wow. Hikaru touched his lips, still in disbelief. I KNOW!! Maybe I’m in a dream!! He pinched himself, hard. “OW!!!” Hmm, I’m still at school, this mustn’t be a dream. It took Hikaru two seconds to realize what that meant. “OH MY GOD SHE KISSED ME!! ME, NOT ANYONE ELSE, MEEE!!!!” He began jumping and pumping his fists in the air, wooping and celebrating the moment. He turned the corner, bumped into a wall, and fell on the floor. The wall fell on the floor too. Wait a minute, that’s not a wall… “Aimi?” Hikaru breathed.

“Oh, Hi Hikaru.” She beamed.

“Sorry for knocking you over…” His cheeks went red.

“Oh, no it’s okay…” She looked away.

Since when was Aimi shy? In a desperate attempt to keep the conversation going… “Uhm, are you doing anything after school?” WHOA, HIKARU, WHAT DID YOU JUST SAY? He thought to himself. After school? ARE YOU INSANE!!! She probably thinks you’re gonna ask her out!! STUPID, STUPID, STUPID!

“Nope…” She looked up at him, her eyes full of hope.

Wait, hope??? It suddenly clicked to Hikaru. Maybe she does want me to ask her out, I mean, she did kiss me. His cheeks went red over the thought. “Uhm, did you want to go do something?” He braced himself for her reply.

“Sure!” Her eyes lit up.

“So, umm, where did you wanna go?”

“There’s this new ice-cream place that just opened up, how about we go there?”

“ice-cream sounds great…so um, I’ll see you after school then.” Hikaru couldn’t believe this was happening. First, she kissed him, now they were going on a date! This was too good to be true!

“Sure, I’ll see you then. Jaa Hika-chan.”

“Jaa.” OH MY GOD…A NICKNAME!!!! Hikaru couldn’t wait to express his being overjoyed any longer. He ran outside and jumped around, pumping his fists in the air and cheering louder and with more energy than before. “WAAAAHHHHHHHHHHH! Were going on a DATE! And she kissed ME! Which means she likes ME! WWWAAHHHHH!”

The school janitor stared out the window from the top floor and shook his head. “Crazy kids.” He muttered.

Aimi walked off to her next lesson. The sweet, excited-to-be-going-on-a-date-with-Hikaru look wiped off her face and replaced with her smirk. “Boy, can I act.”

[Flashback - Aimi’s point of view]

Ugh, I cannot believe I just kissed HIM! I’m probably gonna have to wash out my mouth with soap afterwards. Okay Aimi, calm down, It will all be worth it in the end. I continued walking up the stairs to my class when…

“Yama-chan, I just really don’t know what to do about Hikaru.”

OH MY GOD! IT’S THEM!! And they’re sitting on the next lot of stairs. I hid where I couldn’t be seen by them and eavesdropped on their conversation.

“Really, Rika, if he can’t see what an amazing girl you are the boy must be blind and not worth your time.”

UGH I still don’t know WHAT he sees in that Rika girl. Why can’t he like me like all the other guys? I’m not that bad am I???

“You really think so Yama-chan? But still, I just feel so crap and stupid.”

“Hey, how about I take you somewhere afterwards to cheer you up.”

“That sounds great Yama-chan, but where.”

“Well, I heard this new ice-cream shop opened up...”
