LauraMcEwan asked me to pass along my comments--Being transgender is MOST definitely not a choice. I doubt that anyone would choose to feel wrong in their own body and most transgender people feel they are the wrong sex very early on, by four or five. Wiki would be a general place to start, I don't know any really good web sites on the subject, but it is well accepted by the medical field as a hormonal/chemical imbalance that the person is born with.

Many people do make a choice of which gender they will live as--either the one they were assigned at because of their genitalia or the one they feel most comfortable as, however, they were born with these feelings, they are not simply a choice like deciding which clothes to put on.

We get many babies in the hospital where I work who had 'indeterminate' genitalia and we have to do extensive tests to figure out a sex. Sometimes the medical field is wrong and these children grow up feeling like they are the wrong sex.

Sometimes, the genitalia is not the issue but hormones or chemical imbalances cause a person to feel that they are living in the wrong body.
