The past week or so had been rough for Netto. Ever since he'd stumbled across that half-eaten body, he'd been doing everything he could think of to keep from thinking about it. He'd gone to the Nexus a few times, hoping that the chaos and conversations would help distract him. There, he had
met Anetta (although he didn't know her name) and
another new Enzan - well, a Chaud, but that was close enough. He'd also met
Quint.EXE That hadn't been a pleasant encounter. Netto had left feeling more upset than when he'd gone there. He refused to believe that his brother would end up like that Navi.
He'd stopped watching television entirely and had taken to tuning out his classmates, trying to avoid hearing any mention of the news reports that had been made on it and related incidents. Unfortunately, this hadn't helped his grades at all, which were already suffering from his inability to concentrate for long without seeing visions of torn flesh and smeared blood. He'd failed his last two tests.
He'd tried again to distract himself, this time heading to the Emporium. He never did make it there, though, because he ran into
someone who looked like Zero named Serin with a cyber elf named X. The rest of the afternoon had been wonderfully spent caught up in discovery of cyber elves, excitement at helping X find a way to "talk," and learning about Serin's friend who had somehow attracted the ire of the Hunters. Not once had the thought of zombies or dead bodies entered Netto's mind.
Unfortunately, the relief was only temporary, and his
conversation with Enzan hadn't helped any. Not at first, anyway. Once it switched to the subject of Enzan's birthday, Netto felt better. Even though he had learned that Enzan would be gone for the summer, he felt he could handle it. Enzan would call and visit, and he'd be back. He'd given Netto his hat to prove it.
Saturday morning rolled around, though, and Netto's thoughts still weighed heavily on him as he
went to the Hunters to train. Fortunately, training was not the only thing he would receive that day.
