Hi, everyone!
All right, so. Show season is finally kicking off for the Mark Rose Big Band. While the band waits for its official website to get online, I’ll hijack my own blog for the band’s purposes. So.
For those who don’t know the Mark Rose Big Band, we’re a 22-piece band that plays a variety of swing, jazz, Latin, funk and rock. We’re based out of Vernon BC and are pretty popular at local dances, so if you’re local (or around) come check us out at one of the following:
(And if you’re wondering, Yours Truly plays bass trombone and vocals.)
Friday, April 16th - Dance for Tanzania
This dance will be held at Paddlewheel Park on Friday April 16, from 8:00pm to 11:00pm. The ticket price is $20 (this is still a tentative price-we will let you know if it changes). One hundred per cent of the ticket sales will go towards Biology without Borders, a humanitarian group which will be working this summer in Kenya and Tanzania. Biology without Borders will be taking part in an AIDS research project in a clinic, helping in a Boarding school for albino and disabled children, and building a rain water collection system for the school, along with other humanitarian projects.
Cancelled: Friday, April 23 - Dinner, Dance & Art Gala
This dance has been cancelled due to low ticket sales. I’ll leave the description up for posterity.
Sweep around the dance floor to the music of the renowned Mark Rose Big Band after a sumptuous carved roast beef dinner.
The Okanagan Landing & District Community Association is hosting this event to raise funds to complete the transformation of the heritage CPR Station House in Paddlewheel Park into a museum celebrating the history of Okanagan Landing.
A cash bar opens at 5:30 pm followed by dinner at 6:30 and dancing at 8:00. During the evening guests will have the opportunity to contribute to the museum fund, with all donations of $20 or more receiving a tax receipts. Those donating $500 will have the option of receiving one of a selection of limited edition lithograph prints from BC artists
Robert Genn, Ken Kirby, James Lansdowne,
Toni Onley, Bruce Muir or Stephen Mennie, each professionally appraised at $475 - $500.
Tickets are $37.00 each and are available at Ticket Seller online at www.ticketseller.ca, or by calling 250-549-7469.
(Credit where credit is due: I didn’t write this blurb. Looks like the fundraising coordinator for this event did so.)
Wednesday, May 19th -
The band will also be playing in Salmon Arm on Wednesday, May 19th. This dance will be held at the high school in Salmon Arm, but it is a community event-everyone is welcome! The event starts at 7:30pm and will feature several local jazz and dance bands. The Mark Rose Big Band will be playing from approximately 9:45-10:30pm (yes, the time has changed). Tickets are $5.
The band will be back in Salmon Arm at the Salmon Arm Art Gallery on Thursday, June 3rd, from 7:00-9:00pm. More details as they arise.
