One never knew what one would come across in the forest, indeed.

Someone could, for instance, run into Chamberlayne Watson. Of course, that wasn't necessarily a bad thing, depending on who that particular someone was. He was just out, doing his assigned job. Joy, really.

He didn't know who else had been assigned to the Grounds that night, but he had been a bit surprised to be sent there himself. Most of the time, Dumbledore was kind enough to keep him in the castle. More specifically, in the dungeons, or in the high towers. Spots that were perfectly fine for him.

Spotting Riane walking along the edge of the forest, he cleared his throat, putting on a bright smile as he headed for her. No, he didn't know more than just her name, really, but it was always good to put on a happy front.

Thank Merlin that Annie had helped him perfect that particular lie. "Riane! It... is Riane, right? What a lovely surprise to see you out here on such a... fine night."

Riane wasn't expecting to meet up with anyone so soon into her patrol. Typically, if Noah was the one sharing the grounds patrol, they'd meet up with one another about an hour into their sweeps and walk the rest of it together. To meet up with someone only half an hour into her usual route was, well, unusual. She was adaptable, however, a little change never hurt anyone.

She didn't recognize the voice that called out her name, and it took her a moment to even recognize the face that went with it. He was older by several years and they hadn't associated with one another all that much while at the Ministry. Fortunately, she'd always been good with names and faces, a very useful thing for an Auror.

"Yes, that's right. You are... Chamberlayne, right?" she offered him a slightly confused smile and nodded her head just a little. "It's nice to see you, though I can't quite agree with the fine part." She fell silent, but motioned forward with one hand as an invitation for him to join her on her usual route.

"Well, I'll tell you, I was being sarcastic about the fine night part," Chamberlayne replied, falling into step beside Riane as she motioned for him to join her. She'd remembered his name, so he nodded, that smile still on his lips. "And yes, I'm Chamberlayne."

He'd not been really expecting to meet up with anyone on this particular patrol. Mostly, he tended to keep to himself, unless he was assigned to that wretched Annie. But one had to keep up the pretenses.

"How long have you been out here?"

He was curious about that, because he'd already been wandering about for the past hour or so, and he'd not seen her at all. It wasn't a good sign if he'd passed her without realizing it. He could get into a lot of trouble for something like that.

"Some people actually like this weather," Riane pointed out, her voice soft but friendly. "Can't for anything figure out why, but I suppose we shouldn't all like the same things." As they walked, she lightly tapped the tip of her wand against her thigh as though to help her remember that it's in her hand should she need it. Old habit that she, for some reason, was unable to break.

"What is it, half past, or so?" The question was rhetorical, as she had already pushed back the sleeve on her right arm and checked her watch. "Half an hour, I suppose. How about you?" She turned her head, causing a few loose strands of hair to fall forward over her eyes. Without even realizing what she was doing, she swatted at them with her left hand and pushed the hair back behind her ear.

"When did you arrive? Hasn't been long, I'd hope, since I haven't seen you." Riane looked genuinely bothered by that idea, though if it was because he hadn't been 'greeted' or because it meant she didn't know everything going on around the school, that was the
