Other than legal blindness, how else could Tatiana explain how she could never find what she was looking for? Granted, there were probably a hundred and one explanations, but none of those were obvious enough for Tatiana to catch onto...or, more accurately, Tatiana was not possessing of enough common sense to even think of them.
It was probably just the universal rule of no-human-shall-ever-find-what-he-seeks-most. God worked in mysterious ways, after all.
Tatiana happened to be looking for her cousin Lissi, scanning the Slytherin table this way and that for her. Tati was well aware that she wasn't welcome at the Snake table, but what she had to say simply couldn't wait!
And there, by an empty seat, was Lissi. "Lissi," Tatiana said urgently, rushing over. "Lissi!"
