Merlin Patrick Flanagan was sitting across the corridor from the entrance to the Hufflepuff Common Room. After assuring Ben Connelly that he would eventually be returning to the dorm, as sleep was becoming more and more desired by the second, his wandering had brought him here. Sammy Burke was gone, and while that should have meant he had no reason to linger, instead it made him feel as though this was the only place he could stop, think, and let go.
Never had he been through something more exhausting, both emotionally and physically, and never had he thought that he'd still be hurting hours after the fight. What had he expected? A few curses tossed about here and there and an easy victory? No, but apparently what he'd expected had not been anywhere near this intense anyway.
"Be still, me heart," he whispered, closing his eyes for a moment and breathing in deep. Eventually the day would be over, and then he'd make things right. Somehow.
