Coming up the stairs from the common room after wishing Saffron happy birthday (and 'good night,' he thought with a yawn), Jory tried to be quiet in case any of his dormmates were sleeping. It wasn't very late, but still. As he entered the room, he noticed that Gabriel was still up and offered him a sleepy wave as he crossed to his own bed. "Hey mate," he said, rubbing his eye in exhaustion.

His bed was messy, textbooks and the like strewn all over, and he began removing stuff from it and putting them on the floor. Glancing back toward Gabriel, he noticed that he seemed a little upset. Watching Gabriel carefully for a moment, Jory set his Potions textbook on the edge of his nightstand.

"Uh, everything all right?"

Gabriel shrugged a bit then looked to Jory "Hey. How did it go with Saffron's present? Did she like it?" He seemed a bit down obviously still. He now even realized that he couldn't even say 'Happy birthday' to Saffron which made him feel worse. He thought to himself "I'm such a jerk, and no wonder she doesn't know if she likes me."

Despite himself, Jory was rather pleased. "Um, yeah, actually," he said with a smile, straightening the textbook on his nightstand distractedly. "She seemed to really like it actually, yeah." Or at least he hoped she wasn't just being polite or something. Well, that didn't seem like the sort of thing Saffron would do.

Removing the last of his books and a half-full ink bottle (closed, thankfully) from his rumpled bedsheets, he sat down on the edge of his bed and faced Gabriel. He watched his best friend for a little while, cocking his head to the side. Jory wasn't one to pry, usually, but it was Gabriel, and he really didn't seem to be very happy. "You sure everything's all right?" he asked.

He closed his eyes and took a deep breath "I'm not proud of myself is all." Gabriel opened his eyes and looked to Jory again. "I didn't get Saffron a present, and I've kind of been avoiding her," he said disappointedly. He shook his head and ran his hands up against his face then started to rub his fingertips against his forehead.

Gabriel disided to tell Jory what happened instead of just keeping him at a guess "I was out in the courtyard with Saffron last week, we just talked then it started to rain and we sat underneath an umbrella together. I told her how I felt."
