Sooner or later I knew that I'll have to have an LJ account. The first reason is due to an already existing network of college friends (whom after my graduation, I have estranged myself from, sad, and sadder still, my original blog, Highway Drift (HD), is not fulfilling one of its original mandates, that of having these friends updated on my life). Another reason was that there are some things I would like to write but are too personal, too irrelevant, too incriminating for HD (which I want to appear more as a lifestyle column with social commentary -- so whatever I write there should more or less be relevant to other people whom I haven't met personally). So here I am in LJ, where at least I can sit back and be casual, and let the high-brow writing style rest for awhile.
So what's the final straw that made me go here? And why "Highway Memes"? In a nutshell, "Highway" is where I live right now, within walking range of the C-5 Road in Taguig, and no, it's not in Serendra or McKinley Hill (I'd want to have a piece of Serendra real estate, but then I'm just a petty bourgeois, hacking out a living from a job of two years). As for "Memes," I know I'd be inevitably tagged with a viral meme circulating out there. It's one of those potentially personal or trivial stuff that I'd want to keep out of HD, and since LJ is a known incubating ground for memes, I'd like to keep 'em here, and incubate some memes of my own, hehe.
As for the last straw, blame it on the
Bio-Data Meme that Willy Priles of Naga City (my hometown, by the way) tagged me. It's quite a fitting way to introduce myself so here goes...
Names
When I was a little boy, the entire neighborhood and my relatives called me "Boy," or "Boboy," (Stop laughing! Not yet!) or the most irritating because I feel it is patently condescending how ever you pronounce it: "Booloobuboy." (Once you untie your tongue you can laugh out loud, like ROTKLOTRWTO Gundammit!) The other thing that irritates me is that I share this stupid nickname and its derivatives with at most three other persons in the neighborhood. Ain't that nice, you call out "Boy!" and four heads turn to you at the same time, not to mention the handyman or alalay that happens to be in the vicinity too (heck, it's too generic even other young boys would turn their heads when they hear that call).
Now, we had a neighbor named
Dave (hehe, surprised now Willy?) and I thought it's a cool name, and since I have a David in my real name, why not adopt Dave as my nickname too? Well, the neighbors and my relatives have a hard time adjusting until now, so I let them be. It is my friends starting in high school that has called me Dave, and I appreciate them for that. By the way, the name David means "beloved," naks!
Date of Birth
It came to pass that exactly 90 years after the birth of e. e. cummings, 58 years after the publication of Winnie the Pooh, 57 years after the birth of Roger Moore, 37 years after the breaking of the sound barrier and six years after the birth of Usher,
Dave was born.
Education
Except for the purpose on impressing a prospective employer or a business partner, I am not keen on discussing my educational background since it just blows expectations out of proportion as well as create insecurities where there is supposed to be none. Anyway, the links are there in Highway Drift, and in this LJ (for my LJ friends, that is).
Grade school life was the usual: mostly play, some terror teachers, some feelings of injustice, bullies, the honor list. Hadn't really excelled to my supposed full potential; didn't get the chance in the first place.
High school was when I was challenged to really kick ass. The circumstances were auspicious: started in a clean slate of sorts, had a good showing in the entrance exam. Consequently, I got chances to participate in numerous school activities and compete in contests up to the national level. Won some, lost some, but garnered priceless experience in all. I was relatively stable in those tumultuous times of anyone's life, and in the end I got what they say I will be able to get.
Having proven something at least to myself, I relaxed a bit during college. In the university that I enrolled in, if I relax too much, I'll be a goner. More so since I chose a mouthful of a course called BS Applied Math major in Computational Science. Why the heck that course? Well, in high school, I was good in math and I liked computers. However, I don't want to be too intimate with either, and being a jack of all trades, I chose the fusion of the two (well, it's not exactly the official course description, but you get the drift). To compensate, I made myself active in organizations in school, acquiring work skills as well as developing profound friendships that I hope would last a lifetime.
Work Experience
Similarly, I am not too keen on revealing my current company. It's my first one actually, and I think I'll be staying in it for quite some time. I'm in its IT department while at the same time, in my own volition, I involve myself in some HR stuff like contributing to the internal website and screening new applicants for our team. It's seemingly odd since I'm not exactly paid for these "extra-curricular" activities, but it's just the jack-of-all-trades in me manifesting itself.
Actually, this jack-of-all-trades was more free in manifesting itself back in school. For four years of high school and college, he has been a writer, an editor, contestant (in math, science, computer and general information), contest trainer, event organizer, constitutional commissioner, altar server, tutor, clerk, phone operator, chess player, cheer dancer, etc., etc.--most of them small-time and free-of-charge.
Hobbies and Pastimes
It is obvious that given time, I'd like to engage in a lot of things, and stick to them if I like it. But work is truly murder when it comes to personal time so my hobbies and pastimes have been reduced to writing/blogging, surfing the internet, listening and singing along to music, playing it on the piano if easy. Rarer still are occasional games of badminton, gimmicks with friends, and outings in summer.
Howell, that's it! Since I'm just starting out, I'll tag you, dear reader (actually, I'll just comment in your blog, hehe).
