Samantha grumbled as she came out of the grocery store, two days before halloween and every cart had been taken. Her SUV parked at the outer edge of the parking lot, she struggled to maintain her hold on two pumpkins and several huge bags of candy. To keep the children safe, Chloe's school was having a huge halloween party in lieu of trick-or-treating. It would have been a great idea if only Chloe hadn't volunteered her and only just finally told Sam two nights before. With Angel getting ready for a big show, Samantha couldn't expect her to help and with Jack escalating, the VCTF wouldn't be able to spare her from work early.
Following Samantha, Jack had decided to leave a bouquet of red roses tied up with a black ribbon with little skulls holding roses in their teeth adorning it. He'd checked the perimeter of the parking lot thoroughly in case any agents were following her. Finally convinced she was alone, he checked his makeup and wig before getting out of his car and approaching Samantha's SUV. Unlocking the door with a key he'd gotten copied long ago, Jack slid the roses onto the driver's seat. Caught up in placing the roses and smelling the lingering scent of Samantha's perfume, Jack didn't realize she was approaching.
Fumbling to retrieve her keys from her purse and balance the pumpkins, Samantha didn't notice the elderly man who was just closing the door of her SUV. Just as Jack tried to move away, Samantha's purchases got the better of her and two pulp filled pumpkins hit the pavement, blasting them both with pumpkin. Horrified that she hit an innocent bystander, Samantha began apologizing and fumbling in her purse for a tissue to hand him, when her foot slipped in the pumpkin. Unthinkingly, Jack tried to grab her and ended up joining her on the ground in the gooey orange pile.
"I'm so sorry," Samantha fretted and finally pulled the tissue packet from the purse. Worried about the old gentleman, she started wiping at the pumpkin on his face, despite his protests and trying to push her hand away. His hair moved as she bumped it with her knuckles. A toupee? Maybe she should offer to pay. Samantha panicked when she finally pushed the cloth over the man's face and his skin moved. The man tried to pull away as she removed a broad swipe of makeup. Understanding dawning on her, Samantha gasped, "Jack!"
Rising to his feet, Jack turned to run, but tripped over the candy bag which Samantha had dropped and hit the ground. Samantha grabbed her purse to try and find her gun, only to remember, she'd left it at the VCTF to have it repaired because the safety wasn't functioning smoothly. Taking one of the bags of candy, she flung it at him, it broke and split open, spilling candy around him. As she lunged to try and grab his wig, Jack tried to find his footing and used another bag of candy to fend off her hands.
Angrily Samantha ripped the candy bag spilling more candy around them and finally snatched Jack's wig, screaming wordlessly at him. Jack stood up for a moment, only to slip on pumpkin pulp and candy. Flat on his back, Samantha grabbed the tissues and wiped hurriedly at his face, determined to get the better of Jack.
Even though most of his face was exposed and the game had just reached a new and dangerous level, he didn't want to hurt Samantha if at all possible. Pushing her away, Jack stood once more, as a determined Samantha stood and tried to tackle him resulting in them both flailing amid the holiday disaster. Again on the ground, Samantha lashed out and Jack deflected her with the last two candy bags which she destroyed.
No weapon around, Samantha finally was reduced to throwing handfuls of candy, pulp and insults at Jack. Furiously she snapped at him, "You miserable murderous bastard! Why me? Huh?"
Resigning himself to the difficulties of his situation and trying to keep calm, Jack countered sweetly, "Well Samantha, if you weren't trying to carry so much, I-"
Samantha threw another handful of halloween wreckage at him and screamed in frustration. Her caterwauling ended abruptly when Jack flung a handful of the candy and pumpkin at her. It didn't hurt and certainly it was the least of his crimes he'd ever perpetrated, but it shocked her when Jack retaliated. Oddly at that moment, all his other sins faded into the background and she started throwing pumpkin and sweets at him with both hands.
Reason fleeing both of them, they began throwing the juicy mess at each other fast and hard. Although they spouted a litany of curses at each other, the only intelligible words in their rapid volley was each others names. Fed up with their childish exchange, his face doubtlessly committed to her memory, Jack lost the last bit of his reserve. Flinging himself at Samantha, Jack pushed her onto her back and held her sticky hands over her head. Their eyes locked, she struggled vainly as Jack closed the distance between their faces, covering her mouth with his. Samantha's body overruling her mind, surged eagerly underneath him.
When his lips finally lifted from hers, Samantha stared up at him. Although she had imagined many times what she would say if Jack ever tried to have physical contact with her, every scathing remark fled her mind. Breathlessly she said the only thing that she could think of. "You have pretty eyes."
"So do you," he replied softly. The reality of his situation crashing back, Jack moved off of her and carefully stood up. Gingerly, he offered Samantha his hand, unsure what to expect as the gravity of their encounter washed over her.
Shakily, Samantha allowed him to help her stand. Her feet unsteady on the slippery mess, she put her hand on his chest to steady herself. Under her hand, his heart was beating rapidly and she realized her own was racing just as quickly. His gaze was intense and unwavering, as if assessing her every breath. Samantha's other hand moved up involuntarily to brush a stray pumpkin seed from Jack's hair. Irresistibly, her lips found his once more and Jack's arms wrapped around her tightly as she kissed him.
Unable to bear the intensity of their encounter, Jack finally drew back slightly. Bending to retrieve Samantha's purse he handed it to her. Producing the key to her vehicle, Jack opened the driver's side door for her. Much as he hated to see Samantha leave, she wasn't ready yet and he still had enough control over the situation to end it before she could panic and ruin the important step they had taken.
Still trembling, Samantha moved towards the SUV on auto-pilot and saw Jack's roses on the driver's seat. Shyly he watched to see what she would do with them. Both of them knew if she accepted them it would be the first step over the edge and there would be no turning back for Samantha. A small voice told her to throw them at him, but instead, she found herself picking them up, smelling them and blushing slightly.
Any doubts seemed to melt as he gave her a dazzling smile. Had it always only been a matter of time before she accepted Jack's roses? Was her fall from grace destined from the moment he singled her out. Closing her eyes, she tried to find fear or shame. Instead all she found was curiosity, the scent of roses and a flutter of desire that had resided inside her for a long time. Opening her eyes once more, she half expected Jack would be gone and was pleased she was mistaken.
"I will see you again? Won't I?" Samantha asked. Mentally berating herself for the breathless and vulnerable tone of her words.
Leaning in, Jack pressed his mouth to her ear and whispered, "I'll be counting the minutes."
A moment later, he walked away and within a minute was out of sight. Samantha sat for many minutes holding the roses Jack had left for her. Her life forever changed, Samantha made her way home to get cleaned up.
Sleep had eluded Samantha, leaving her exhausted as she went into work. Tired and unable to stop thinking of Jack, she had giggled uncontrollably during a discussion about Jack's latest crimes. Worried about her, Bailey suggested she go home. Samantha was gathering things up in her office to leave when her line rang. Chloe's school calling to thank her for the cases of candy and the dozen jack o' lanterns she'd sent over, although there were two that they had deemed a bit too disturbing for the children.
Jack, she thought to herself and smiled as she made her way to her car. In the driver's seat of the rental she had while her pumpkin scented vehicle was being detailed, Samantha was pleased to see a single rose with a note attached. In a familiar hand was written the name of a restaurant and a time along with a tiny drawing of a jack o' lantern. Roses would always come to mind when she thought of Jack, but Halloween had become his holiday...
