The scent of gunpowder still lingered in the air as Bailey stood over them. Clutching Jack tightly, Samantha wished she would wake up and it would all just be a bad dream. For ten years they'd lived quietly disguising their kills and avoiding detection and tonight by some fluke, Bailey spotted her at the gas station and tailed her home. He hadn't even given Jack a chance for surrender, he'd just aimed and shot at him without warning. Jack's shirt was red with blood and Sam clung to him as if holding on tightly enough would prevent him from slipping away.
"Hold on, Jack. Please," Samantha begged as she held him.
His breathing was labored as he murmured, "Love you, Samantha."
Reaching up he brought her mouth to his one last time and kissed her. Her heart ached as she returned his kiss and felt him slip away. Trembling, she reached into her skirt for the knife she always carried. Bailey took a step forward as if to stop her when she held it to her arm.
"Don't even think of it Bailey," she commanded, her eyes blurred with tears. "Stop me and I'll ruin your career by telling everyone how you shot him in cold blood. All you would do is destroy yourself and delay the inevitable."
After she'd brought the knife lengthwise on her arm and cut deep, Bailey pleaded, "Why, Sam?"
"Jack was my life," she replied, then ignored him as she waited for her veins to bleed out. Cradling Jack she promised him she'd join him soon.
Minutes later, she did.
