Frontier airlines charges $75 for a checked bag if the weight is over 50 pounds. For this reason - and other financial reasons - I didn't buy as many books as I would have liked while at WorldCon. Even so, my suitcase felt very heavy and I was afraid I'd have to cough up the extra money. Not so. The suitcase weighed ONLY 42 pounds. Darn! Too bad I didn't know that sooner. Oh well.
I had a fantastic time at WorldCon. The only downside was limited access to free internet. However, since I was on the go from the time I got up until the time I went to bed, I didn't have much time to get online anyway. Of course, if I had had inexpensive internet access in my hotel room, perhaps I would have made more time to stay in my room and get in touch with people.
I'm torn between writing a long, detailed report of my week, or a brief synopsis of the highlights. Maybe I'll go with brief for now, and write a longer report later.
I was out of bed at 7:30 every morning. Some mornings I went to the lobby to try to connect to the internet, and other mornings I wandered around my hotel room until I woke up and figured out what sessions I would attend during the day. I was at the convention center by 9:30 most mornings, grabbing a coffee along the way as I headed to a 10am panel.
For most of the days, I attended various panels from 10am until 4pm, at which point I would realize that coffee, a piece of cheese and a couple oranges were not enough food and I would go in search of something else, usually a hot dog at the concession stand. I wasn't organized enough to think about going to the 16th street mall to get something and be back in time for a 5:30 session that I wanted to attend. Besides, I needed to spend time in the dealer room, looking for books or other things I might "need". I did buy some protein bars one day, so I did have something more nutritious.
I would have supper around 9pm (11:30pm on Friday night), and then check out the party floor to see who was roaming around. I'd be asleep by about 1am most nights and do it all over again the next day.
I volunteered to be a Den Mom at the Masquerade (I would have been a Ninja, but I didn't bring any all-black clothes with me), which meant that I got to hang out in the green room and see all the costumes up close. There were some very interesting costumes. I was in charge of the "Young Fans" contestants, and since their presentation and judging was finished early on, I was free to leave and go out front about 30 minutes after the Masquerade started. However, I chose to stay backstage and talk to the contestants about how they made their costumes.
This is a very high-level update of my adventures at WorldCon. I did take notes at most of the panels that I attended and got some ideas for changes that I can make to my own writing, when I get back to it.
I've spent the last week just relaxing and winding down. It was nice to have time for myself after my exciting trip.
